Firstly, are all toothpastes pretty much the same and do the same thing?
Secondly, I was given solid toothpaste tabs as part of a Christmas gift box. They clean the teeth well (but taste a bit weird) and I’m unsure that continued use would protect or remineralise teeth like regular toothpaste does. (I don’t think this part has a particular question)

No. Some toohpastes contain different ingredients.
ie: no sweeteners or no fluride

No. Not always (the usual big brand names though are all the same, with variations on a theme).

Those tabs are missing the most important ingredient for tooth treatment IMO, fluoride. The other stuff such as dicalcium phosphate helps, but is no replacement for fluoride.

Luckily you don’t have a *ock, or those tabs would cause problems.

I have a heck of a lot of trouble getting a good toothpaste that doesn’t burn my tastebuds off (strong peppermint) or taste worse than the arsehole of a sheep with diarrhea (Aim, McLeans etc.). Cedel spearmint isn’t great.

Children’s toothpastes such as “Oral-B stages”, I’ve found do not contain sufficient abrasives to actually clean teeth, so avoid.

Soul Pattinson “Plain Toothpaste” has no fluoride, so should be avoided.

I’ve even tried three toothpastes imported from the Middle East. Still no good, the flavour is still foul.

Last time I actually found a bearable toothpaste they stopped manufacturing it shortly afterward.

Maybe you should give these Toothy Tabs a try, one might have a flavour you like. And then some Tooth Mousse to remineralise and fluoridate your toothy pegs. I guarantee that the vanilla flavour is not strong at all.

The flouride is in the water and a good brushing in water should be good enough.

Oh wait. They’ve added fluoride since last time I tried it, so must try it again. It costs twice as much as other brands.

I use an anti-bacterial toothpaste. May seem like overkill but I can’t afford dentists, so killing as many mouth germs as I can seems a sensible precautionary policy.

If you use a little salt on the toothpaste before applying any old toothpaste, it will act as an anti-bacterial. If you gargle in a weak salt/water solution (rinsing after with freshwater) it will not only greatly reduce mouth bacteria and keep colds etc at bay, but will refresh the mouth far better than commercial mouthwashes.

My dentist doesn’t recommend mouthwashes as they have been implicated in oral cancers amongst populations who don’t drink alcohol. He reckons in my case I may as well swill with a scotch at least I will get to enjoy it and it does the same job.

so has oral sex, which is why it’s imperative not to listen to doctors.

Mao didn’t brush his teeth and used to gargle with tea instead. An old peasant habit. His breath stank and his teeth turned black and fell out.

bit of history

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegitimi_non_carborundum

“Illegitimi non carborundum is a mock-Latin aphorism meaning “Don’t let the bastards grind you down”. Carborundum, also known as silicon carbide, is an industrial abrasive material, but its name resembles a Latin gerundive.

The phrase originated during World War II. Lexicographer Eric Partridge attributes it to British army intelligence very early in the war (using the plural dative/ablative illegitimis). The phrase was adopted by US Army general “Vinegar” Joe Stillwell as his motto during the war. It was later further popularized in the US by 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.”

There is a very very plain toothbrush that my sister started using after her immunologist visit. I forget the name but remind me and I’ll ask her. She’s also in Melbourne so you will be able to procure it too.
