Subject: Man loses 17kgs on McDonald's only diet
A man in the US has proven that you can eat junk food and still lose weight, after dropping 17 kilos on a McDonald’s only diet.
High school biology teacher John Cisna was so determined to prove to his students that it’s not about what we eat, but rather how much – he went on a self-imposed McDonald’s only diet for three months.
Instead of gaining weight from all the junk food, Mr Cisna ended up losing 17 kilos while his cholesterol dropped from 249 to 170.
Mr Cisna’s experiment aimed to show that we can eat anything as long as we stick to a limit of 2,000 calories per day.
The Iowa-based teacher even got his students to map out his meal plans for him.
During the three-months, Mr Cisna – who never previously exercised or watched his calorie intake – also began walking for 45 minutes a day.
McDonald’s were so impressed with Mr Cisna’s experiment, his local outlet even offered to provide 90 days of meals with no charge.
On a typical day, Mr Cisna would eat a range of ‘healthy’ fast food meals including oatmeal and salad, but he would indulge in a burger with chips and ice cream for dinner.
According to McDonalds, a large Big Mac meal with chips and coke contains 1,170 calories.
Usually, Mr Cisna would balance these heavier meals with lighters options offered at the fast-food restaurant in the US, such as fruit and maple oatmeal which contains only 290 calories.
“The point behind this documentary is – it’s choice. We all have choices,” Mr Cisna told the MailOnline, explaining: “It’s our choices that make us fat, not McDonald’s.”

That caloric intake and activity level are the key factors determining weight gain or loss (in an individual) should not be surprising but it does seem to be something that people are confused about.

I know and eskimo that lived on blubber for six months, caught his own whales, was a bit fat but not so fat that he couldn’t do what he needed to feed himself. So apparently eating at McWhales doesn’t cause a stomach you can’t lean down over.

To elaborate: Some people aren’t salt sensitive – they can eat lots of salt or little salt, and their BP won’t change. Others are very salt sensitive, and a change in dietary salt can change BP by >20 mmHg.

Also, what some consider to be the ‘normal’ increase in blood pressure with age, isn’t really. Isolated native populations with very low salt diets don’t have that increase (also low in other food baddies).

How do you suggest that they ‘deter’ them?

this really wasn’t an “experiment”. no control and just one test subject. it is just interesting more than anything else.

Just because it’s poorly designed doesn’t mean it isn’t an experiment…

I thought that’s what ‘Sea Shepherd’ etc were doing. Why duplicate the effort?

It’s really just a matter of a certain amount of energy in, a certain amount of energy out. Doesn’t matter whether it’s McDonald’s or anything else.

If you mean that incident where the Greenpeace speedboat was run over by the whaling ship:
at the time, quite a number of well-qualified commentators remarked that the Greenpeace vessel was at fault. I agree with them. The video of the incident showed that the Greenpeace vessel was stationary to starboard of the whaling ship, and would have been safe if it had stayed stationary.
The video clearly shows the Greenpeace vessel accelerated on a converging course with the whaling ship, as evidenced by the appearance of prop-wash behind the Greenpeace boat where there’d been none before. The Greenpeace skipper put his vessel into increased danger.
Although the Greenpeace vessel may have ‘technically’ had right of way under Rules 13 and 15 of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS), the Greenpeace skipper had equal responsibility to do his utmost to avoid collision, as stated in Rules 2 and 8.
He did precisely the opposite.
That said, the Japanese skipper was also deficient in his responsibility under Rules 2 and 8.
It was EVERYBODY’S fault.
If you’d like to check the COLREGS, there’s lots of online sources for them Here’s one: http://www.admiraltylawguide.com/conven/collisions1972.html

I admit chicks take it too far, and it looks like young blokes might be joining them in the body image stakes, but there is also a western problem with cheap food and labour saving devices contributing to a situation where I have read that the age expectancy is the west is going down due to obesity levels.

Yeah that will do it.
The number of 350 pound people in aged care homes is very limited.
That being said… being hungery for forty years hardly makes up for four years less of incontinence and dependency.
As much as those factors stiffen the statistics…

as has been said, if you restrict calories and walk every day, you’re bound to lose weight.
I don’t mind maccas. I don’t have it often (probably 3 months or so) but when I do I enjoy it.
I would not enjoy it everyday.
