I have a question regarding the kilojoules in alcohol. All other things being equal, does a higher alcohol content mean more kilojoules?

For instance, a typical spirit (rum, scotch, bourbon, vodka, etc) at 40% alc / vol will have about 275kJ per 30ml nip.

If it were 50% alc / vol, would the calories increase proportionally?

Yes. Alcohol (ethanol) has an energy per gram of 28 kj from memory.

I did try a sample bottle of Glenfiddich 18 year … las eve.. er, early morning.. It did mean that I really was happy that rain was falling at the time I was supposed to arise and head for work.

You have a good memory. Wikipedia says 29 kJ/g.

Which is why the RBT concentrates on farmers utes, in m,y region.

I should mention that we already have the higher range of drivers full of alcoholic energy but that we also have a very high level of otherwise drugged up drivers.

Because alcohol is 29kJ/g?

Okay, so if I am watching kilojoules, then not only is the monitoring of how many nips I have important, but also whether it is standard (37%) or high (50%) alcohol content.

You can check the value given in the OP using Google Calculator
Ethanol has a density of 0.789 g / mL

(.789 (g / mL)) * (30 mL) * 0.4 * (29 (kJ / g)) =
274 572 joules

Absolutely and energy is utes, that’s car Utes or cU’s as opposed to Indian Utes, it’s a fascinating topic.

Indeed. The sugar content of scotch & rum is negligible, so you can determine their available energy content from the alcohol content alone. For things like bourbon, the sugar adds about 10%, giving around 290 kJ per nip.

is there any indication how much of that is absorbed into the body??? I assume if we drink a nip then the whole thing doesn’t end up in our system as energy needing to be burned off?

Speed of the intake is the matter at hand.

I’m not sure, but, as you drink more your body doesn’t use the energy as efficiently apparently ;-).

Loss of co-ordination leads to inefficient use of energy supply?

Good point. The body doesn’t extract all the available chemical energy from ethanol; if it did, it’d convert all of it to carbon dioxide and water. Some ethanol does get completely converted, but some of it ends up as other by-products. See Wikipedia for details.

Drinking doesn’t make you fat

“It sounds too good to be true. But on Saturday the Mail carried extracts from an extraordinary new book by science writer TONY EDWARDS, drawing on a wealth of medical evidence, that says alcohol is good for your health.

Today, in part two of our serialisation, the former BBC TV science producer for Horizon and QED dispels the myth that drinking makes you fat…”
