Subject: Time for a new Star Trek series?

I’ve been reading a fair bit about the history of Star Trek and, with the recent releases of the new Star Trek films, was wondering if it were time for a new Star Trek TV series? If so, what is the story premise? The new movies have deviated a little from the original Star Trek world and so it gives them the ability to explore various avenues. For example, what about the time at Starfleet Academy? The movies left that open so your have scope for at least a 3 or 4 year series, following the ‘adventures’ of Kirk, McCoy, etc. I know this had previously been proposed but I can’t remember why it never stood up.

No!

Have been watching a lot of Star Trek recently, as the Voyager and Deep Space Nine series never appeared on Australian TV until just a few months ago. The Star Trek Next Generation series is currently being shown here. The Star Trek Enterprise series (the prequel starring the chap from Quantum Leap) has never appeared on Australian TV, neither has the animated series.

I’ve been noticing how, as the series of serieses progresses, the science content of the Star Trek episodes has dwindled off to nothing. It’s become all about personalities – Kira’s love life, Klingon honour, etc. A new series would contain even less science.

Have to correct you there; all the series – including the animated ST – were run on TV (Channel 9 IIRC). I remember seeing the animated series on Saturday morning TV though I can’t remember which channel.

Hell yes please!
I reckon something like a bit of the sci-fi series Eureka influenced on a new ST series would be pretty darn good.

You didn’t have a TV during the 90s? I used to stay up late for them during school holidays, and set the VCR during term…

Perhaps something set in the ST universe but not specifically about a Star Fleet vessel, some independent roguish Marquis or privateers.

Oh wait, that’s basically what Firefly was, but that got canned…

No.
It would be ruined by PC ness.
Doing bad things to those aliens, using resources warping all over the universe.
Petitions started to save the three headed people of Sirius etc. etc.

That’s a good point… but what about things like The Supranos or Breaking Bad? No PC there,

Not yet. I just got hold of a couple of series of TNG so I’ve got some catching up to do.

I like the rebooted movie franchise and there sure is plenty of room for a new TV series, but TV has certainly changed a lot in the last decade.

One thing is for sure, what ever form it took it would have to be far more sophisticated than the old stuff

But it’s the struggle to moral idealism that makes Star Trek Star Trek.

Makes? I should say ‘made’. It’s just more FX driven kill the bad guy fuck-yeah-America nonsense, using the characters from Star Trek, now.

They had a perfect opportunity with Enterprise to base a really smart series around the birth of the federation… and wasted it on stupid Xindi arc and time travel..

what a monumental crock that was

they should commandeer the borg’s cube ship design and get a real spaceship for once

this could come about as the enterprise is attacked both sides manage to transfer their crew to the other resulting fighting in the corridors

one development could be that before the fight everyone goes into some mind machine that conditions them for hand to hand fighting and weapons training as a last ditch attempt to win the battle.

the borg is still firing rounds at the enterprise but the enterprise can’t fire back as they have hundreds of crew on board fighting in the passageways of the borg ship. even if the borg manage to destroy the enterprise they would still have the little matter of the problems prowling the decks destroying any borg they discover – normal hand guns have been 3d printed on the enterprise as a surprise tactic to take down the borg conditioned to defend against phasers.

the enterprise now takes position around a moon to try to evade the borg ship seriously damaged, with 3/4 of the crew on board the borg ship dead the borg decide that the contamination has gone on far too long and decide to go into a self detonation sequence as well as transmit that its going to suicide to stop the enterprise taking over its vessel.

the enterprise gets wind of the losses on the cube ship by the date being streamed back and makes a bee line for the cube ship , the shields of the borg ship have now been knocked out by the fighters onboard and now enterprise already fatally wounded comes at the borg ship transporting as many people as it can to the cube ship as it brings its shields up and down to do so, the borg ship is firing furiously taking chunks of abandoned infrastructure of the frontal part of the ship out as it transfers people to the borg ship

meanwhile onboard the fighters have located where the queen bee is located and rig up an IED in a corridor where the queen would be expected to flee or mount an attack, the queens takes the bait and is permanently taken out leaving the ship leaderless with no further with no effective orders coming from the control deck.

the last of the survivors and equipment of the enterprise transfer to enterprise – as the borg ship gunners are still at their posts obeying the last orders

the borg ship is now in star fleet hands and the destruction halted as they get into the main system and shut down the main engine which was being ramped up to act as the bomb on board.

the remaining borg wounded are rounded up and held in detention until they can work out how to deal with them

all they have to do is get the main engine up and running and get out of dodge before the borg fleet can appear over the horizon.

the ships computer could be used to create false fighters on board the enterprise for the borg fighters to shoot at and waste energy on

one development of the enterprise uniform could be that people don the expected armour for such confrontations

drones could be used in these battles (normally enterprise has crew running around with no protection and no other means of fighting than hand guns)

this film would be one of attrition – lord of the rings style

If you let the star trek script writers have your password, star trek will be, like it should be.

star trek died in the arse a bit like most of the sci fi genre as “relationships” filled the script like concrete

How did you determine what was a side?

“Alice remained looking thoughtfully at the mushroom for a minute, trying to make out which were the two sides of it; and as it was perfectly round, she found this a very difficult question. “

Yeah I agree, it’s like watching all those dumb things you have seen 100 times on Earth… played out in space.

Whats the point.
