Subject: day lily from seed

my brilliant yellow day lily (will track down the variety at some stage) gave me some seed this year, it is a variety that doesn’t spawn plant-lets, the other day lily flowering near by was “classic edge”, (there may have been another variety flowering as well, can’t remember off hand but I’ll check my labels later), no other day lilies near by, I wonder what I will get? may take a few years to find out, but the seeds are in a pot germinating as week speak. if it is a cracker I’ll share it out. if it is better than a cracker I will dream of becoming a millionaire :)
Thinking I may cut them back fertilise to promote flowering and do some crazy pollinating of my own, see what eventuates. Anyone here got day lily seed and grown on?
from the net:
There are basically two type of Daylilies. Tetraploids & Diploids. I have no intention to get into all the scientific Mumbo jumbo of their difference, Basically the difference is in the number of chromosomes each type possesses. Tetraploids contain 44 chromosomes and Diploids contain 22 chromosomes. Tetraploid Daylilies have been heralded by hybridizers as having significant advantages over Diploids. Tetraploids tend to exhibit larger blooms, more intense colour, sturdier scapes and heavier substance in both the bloom and foliage. The leaf, stem and blooms exhibit greater vigour and vitality.

will need to figure out the ploids :)

wonderful day lilies

I’m not a fan of day lilies….I ripped them out and destroyed them. Far too invasive for my liking.

I have mine in pots, but if I had them in a garden it would be an annual or bi-annual job to lift and replant them, easy really.

Don’t let that stop you from trying the seed in pots. You may be pleasantly surprised with the results. Please do keep them from spreading seed into the bush though.

When walking with Papua New Guineans and I spy a Daylilly, they get quite surprised when I eat a flower. They think this dim dim has gone long long.
