Harpoon Ship Stopped!

Yushin Maru No. 3
At 2:50pm AEDT on January 10th, Captain Peter Hammarstedt of the Sea Shepherd Ship The Bob Barker reported that his ship had just crossed into Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) 200 miles off Macquarie Island, but the pursuing Japanese whale harpoon ship, Yushin Maru No. 3, has stopped one mile outside the zone.
Sea Shepherd Australia chair Bob Brown said that congratulations are due to the Federal Minister for the Environment, Greg Hunt, who had been in touch with the Japanese authorities over the impending invasion of the Australian Whale Sanctuary, which includes the EEZ, by the harpoon ship.
“Once again Sea Shepherd has seen the Japanese whaling fleet’s tactics thwarted. But we are mindful that the fleet is publicly committed to killing another 931 Minke Whales as well as 50 Fin Whales and 50 Humpbacks,” Dr. Brown said.
Managing Director, Jeff Hansen, phoned the Hon. Minister Greg Hunt and passed on our Captains’ and crews’ sincere thanks and appreciation for his efforts. The hunt for the Japanese whaling fleet’s butchering ship, the Nisshin Maru can now resume.

I think that’s the problem in Australia
theres a news black out here on weird stuff that happens and stuff that won’t be good for tourism
if you relied purely on the media here to find out what was going on you’d be boned
it was one of first things I noticed here, a blanket is thrown over world events the media here is sensitive to

Do you have some evidence for that hypothesis?
There seems to be a mountain of evidence against it.

What perhaps may be said of the media, is that the news/events they ‘ride’, certainly is fodder for them (media) being the machine of ‘business as usual’, appealing to easy-think.

LOL, who could have predicted that?
Malcolm Turnbull hoped to use his visit to Facebook HQ in Silicon Valley into a chance to demonstrate his technical prowess. Instead it turned into an NBN slanging match…
He used the visit to run a Q@A session on Facebook, no doubt looking forward to some friendly banter with constituents and others. Instead he was subjected to fierce criticism over the merits, or otherwise, of the Coalition’s ‘technology agnostic’ NBN.
(loadposition graeme}
Why are you planning to implement technology with less longevity and higher operating costs with a poorer revenue stream than Labor’s original NBN plan? The only people your current plans seem to benefit are the incumbent telcos.
Why are you so near-sighted on the NBN scheme? Does this stem from your generational lack of understanding/inability to use IT to the capacity of everybody else?
NBN concerns me. We NEED a world class system. Are you going to help deliver this?
Considering the fact that the majority of the NBN board is filled with former Telstra employees do you think it wise that this organisation is negotiating with Telstra for the sale of the copper wiring (an outdated method of communication that their own CEO referred to as ’5 minutes to midnight’ ten years ago).
I’d personally like to thank you for both ruining any chance I had of working from home or moving from the city to somewhere rural. I understand that by the time Australia grinds to a halt from relying on an inadequate telecommunications infrastructure you would have already retired from politics and released a tell-all book entitled ‘Don’t blame me, I wanted it too’.
You get the idea. That’s just from the first page. The whole session has hundreds of similar comments. There were comments from supporters of the Coalition’s plan, and comments about other issues, but it was dominated by comments from critics. Go here and read it all for yourself.

It is a possible option and I might get one eventually, especially if it can alleviate the anxiety of some of my visitors who have never been somewhere you don’t get mobile reception. You should see the forlornly waving their smart phones about.

I think everyone would like fibre to the home but we cant afford it right now wot with Labor’s debt to be paid off and now knowing the real price, we can build the arteries now and build the capillaries when we can afford it.

What perhaps may be said of the media, is that the news/events they ‘ride’, certainly is fodder for them (media) being the machine of ‘business as usual’, appealing to easy-think.
Yes, I’d agree with that.
I’d also suggest that they are reluctant to publicise anything that reflects well on the government of the day, regardless of party.
I’m talking about non-Murdoch media here, obviously.

this is the reasoning that gave us FTTN… that is, high speed, high bandwidth communications infrastructure isn’t all that important because all it means is that we will be able to download paged on the internet faster…

Well that would be nice in my business I must say. But I don’t imagine that I will get it for a long time anyway, as the plan is to keep us on satellite here, and the inherent latency buggers up such things.
