I want to convert a couple of DVDs to a compressed format like mp4; I have software that will do the conversion but how do I tell which of the DVD files contains the movie? Obviously I don’t want the menu, extras, etc.

The biggest file?

the better programs such as Handbrake will figure that out for you IME.
The one I am planning to use is the AVS Video Converter.

Never heard of it, so I’m not sure, go with the largest file and see what happens. I can recommend Handbrake though, it’s free and works well.
I use MakeMKV and sometimes it shows a number of full length files that can’t all be on the DVD, I think it has something to do with different “views”, I’m not sure. It automatically just chooses the first one of these. I don’t think MakeMKV would satisfy the needs of Obviousman as it doesn’t compress, as such. Most rips end up being similar in size to the source material…
I’ll put in another vote for handbrake.
It works “out of the box”.

I tried it many moons ago and, from my hazy recollection, I found it frustrating. Perhaps it has improved since then…
