Subject: my achilles tendon

its been sore for ages but not sore enough to impede what little movement I made.
the past two weeks I’m getting healthy including exercise.
I dance or walk every day.
now the tendon is really painful.
I tried strapping it and have one of those pull on bandage thingies but its not helping
Dr Google tells me to rest it for between 1 week and several months. don’t much care for this suggestion.
I’m wondering why it was sore before (its on the same leg as the arthritic knee and hip) and thinking it was because I am really overweight. obese according to my BMI.
I don’t want to stop walking cos it took me years to get moving.
I tried deep heat with no luck and am going to try voltaren cream if I can find it
has anyone any words of advice please?
thanks

I suggest you see a doc or physio. Treatment for inflammation vs tear vs other things will vary. If it needs an ultrasound, this can often be bulk-billed.

In the meantime, keep walking; it’s good for you.

Voltaren cream contains an anti-inflammatory so it should help but won’t narrow down the cause much.

I had a small tear at the attachment point (heel) in December 2012.

It still hurts. Especially when I’m working on steep slopes.

The doc referred me to a podiatrist who put some orthotics in my boots. They gave me immediate relief. Simply raising the heel a couple of millimetres mad a huge difference.

Hi Purps, sounds like you’ve got a tear and a Physio is the expert you need.

The Anti-Inflam OCDC is talking about works better when mixed 50:50 with anti-bruise cream (Hirudoid cream, over-the-counter from a chemist).

I can’t take a stab-in-the-dark approach, what you’re describing could be a dozen things. In general, you will get benefit from:

Stretching the muscles (gently!)
Wearing good shoes
Wearing ‘support’ compression garments
Icing the sore bit after exercise
Taping the joint to restrict movement
Using an over-the-counter pain control drug like Neurofen
Massage
Active recovery (short warm-up, stretch, warm down)

You might try changing the exercise:

Walk on soft sand
Walk / run in water
Swim
Use a rowing / cycling / stair / elliptical machine
Walk on a trampoline / rebound trainer.
Skip
Dance / aerobics / boxercise / weights circuits / combat sports style classes will use more of the body, but be safe and self-paced.

Keep it up…

:-)

my achilles tendon,
its been sore for ages
———————————————-

Not convinced that is possible as tendons have no nerves…

Of course it could be that I am wrong for the first time.
