The fuse to my deep freeze blew whilst I was away one weekend and all the meat spoiled. I washed the freezer out using bicarb of soda and some heavy duty cleaner. Even so, the clear plastic trays still have a lingering bad odour.
Any tips on how I can get rid of the smell?

Don’t know what else you can do except maybe vinegar wash but it might be a good idea to find out why the fuse blew.

First: use a chlorine bleach, to kill any residual bugs. Not a scented bleach, no sodium hydroxide in it (check the bottles for ingredients). Use neat. Leave on for >10 minutes before washing with detergent and hot water as you would for washing dishes.
Second: wipe over with vanilla essence, after all components are dry. Use vanilla essence, not imitation vanilla. Again check bottles carefully for ingredients.

I’m with the bleach idea too. You can also leave an opened box of baking soda in the freezer to absorb smells. And I quite like a teatree oil wipe…meant to have disinfectant qualities.

Yes, i was going to vanilla essence, too.
A few drops on a clean cloth, wipe around affected areas, refresh cloth as necessary.

Saw a program on tv, where they place a dead pig in a highly desirable car and left it in hot conditions for several weeks. They then cleaned it out and tried everything to make it smell better, then offered it for sale at a bargain price. Despite the interest, the lingering smell turned everyone off except one person who bought it. When asked why he said for parts. The essence of the story is bad body smells are very difficult to get rid of.

If that doesn’t work, burn the house down?
Anything else I can help you with?

That’s a point. I used that, or whatever it’s called, to get rid of the smell of car windscreen washing water that had gone off. Use one or two drops whenever it smells off, and the smell will immediately disappear for a couple of days. After a couple of months the original smell will completely fade.
What is it called, not Nidol? Got it. It’s Nilodor. I picked it up at a local supermarket, may have been in the pets aisle.

Leave in the sun for a while. The warmth helps release the aromatics and the UV will do the bleaches job.

What’s the story with vanilla essence? Artificial vanillin is chemically identical to what’s in the real one.

Real vanilla essence is quite alcoholic. That’s the difference.

PS. Do not under any circumstances use vanilla to mask the odours of a car. I made that mistake recently and regretted it immediately. Vanilla smells far to much like puke.

A handy thing to do if you go away a lot is keep some icecubes in a glass in your freezer, if you find them a single mass it means your freezer has defrosted and refrozen.
