Pinched (Compressed) Nerve

I have what appears to be this at the moment, its not much fun, I’m taking Panadeine Forte for it, my neck, right shoulder and upper right arm is effected,

I’m having trouble sleeping, I have not slept for three nights in a row, I cant lie down on my back or on my right side either, the pain varies during the day and night, its mostly bad while I’m trying to get to sleep, the pain varies between a two to a six out of ten,

I have had a look around the net for info, I have been to hospital and have had around ten x-rays which showed up nothing much, My own doctor is away until Feb 18

resting helps, typing or using the mouse doesn’t help it much

but I feel I still have to do things, until the pain gets too much then I rest a bit

the greatest comfort I can get is kneeling down on the floor resting my head on the bed, with my arms stretched over my head and staying very still

Has anyone had experience with pinched nerves?

I have bulging disks which give much the same sort of trouble, Trying to sleep is a balancing act where a wrong move results in pain. The bugger is that now golf is impossible too.

I am not a doctor but I will offer you my 2 cents worth.

You might be better off taking aspirin rather than paracetamol. Aspirin will help to reduce any inflammation that may be aggravating the problem.

Try this exercise. Stand up and raise your right arm over your head until you forearm lightly touches the top of your head. Now gently bow your body and neck to the left and slightly forward. The idea is to try to open up the vertebrae that might be compressing the nerve and allow the nerve some relief.

See a doctor.

Also try an ice pack – it can help reduce swelling and cold deadens nerves, which tends to reduce pain.

Brachial Plexus impingement. Have you injured your neck?

Very personal anecdotal evidence……if I’ve done too much painting of ceilings or collecting of firewood I get inflammation in my shoulder. On the occasion that I was crying with pain and took myself to the hospital some years ago, Xrays showed nothing unusual. So the conclusion was inflammation. I was recommended to use ibuprofen (Nurofen). I had never used it before. It was pretty close to magic for me. I use it sparingly if I’m sure what I have done is inflammatory. Panadol is less effective as it is not anti-inflammatory. In my body aspirin is OK, but the ibuprofen was better.

S/he could be right.

I would be doing a few minutes of light exercise to warm up, then working my way very gently through these stretches

Good luck with it.

Long time ago I had pinched nerve many times, eventually with rest it fixed itself.

BEFORE trying that, look closely at the small print on the packet of aspirin. My packet says not to be taken for pain or fever. For an NSAID (anti-pain and inflamation) I use topical diclofenac, available as Voltaren cream or as a no-name equivalent without prescription.

Ive been trying that exercise, it helps a bit,

yes I think I might give the paracetamol a miss, it doesn’t seem to be doing much

if you want to get rid of a pinched nerve try this

hold onto something that vibrates – a dildo , massager unit.

i had a pinched nerve that had plagued me for months – i went for a motorcycle to see a mate and an hour later no pinched nerve

went for a motorcycle ride

you’ll find that vibration will ease the nerve out of the wrong place

i had caused it by lifting something way to heavy and it had trapped a nerve in my wrist

I ventured out yesterday for a short car trip as a passenger from Ballarat to Creswick

it hurt like hell all the way there, and all the way back, and a few times I was in despair

and that was in a real comfy car

I have had problems with a bulging disk too. And I have experienced a ‘miraculous’ cure on the instructions of a physiotherapist who told me how to do Mackenzie manoeuvres (movements?). Anyway, these particular movements squished the stuff that was sticking out and touching the nerve back into place. It was all over in a few minutes. This was after 3 days of agony and a useless and expensive visit to a Chiropractor who took x-rays that were of no help at all. The GP prescribed anti-inflams, but importantly referred me to the physio.

I have been going to the same bloke now for nearly 30 years. He has never failed to sort out the various states of agony that I have found myself in over the years. I’d recommend a visit to an experienced physio for anyone with this sort of problem.

you’d find that vibration that you can feel coming up the arm will release the nerve

it worked for me, it will work for you

you might have to hold onto to it though like a motorcycle

a dildo might be the most useful thing – just tell them its to release a pinched nerve

At Christmas end of year drinkies, I managed to do something to my back so diabolical that I had problems holding my bevvie. Playing 8 ball was so bad I potted only one ball for the entire game (thank Dawg for keeping my pants on!). Then I rode the scooter home and spent the rest of the sleepless night attempting to find the apocryphal “sweet spot” that would enable at least some rest.

I had to tell the doctard’s receptionist that I was having problems breathing (which I pretty much was) due to the pain in my back to avoid a six hour wait. The result was Panadine Forte + Voltaren cream.

The analgesics helped, but it was the anti-inflamatory provided the most relief.

years ago i used to work in a pool shop

lifting the 15 L containers around became easier but the side effect was that you’d periodically get this funny pain in your spine that almost immobilised you – regardless of any safe lifting technique you used during the day

someone else told me they used to get it too.

I haven’t had any luck with analgesics for that sort of pain either.

Funny things analgesics. I was on oxycontin for months after my hip operation. That’s really strong stuff (I was in a helluva lot of pain). Rather than counteracting the pain directly, it seemed to move my mind into a different place, somewhere along the path to sleep, that made the pain more bearable.

Looxury!

I used to work in a timber yard. the 40 Kg bags of cement were a doddle!

Then I had to pick them up. You don’t get used to it. You just do more damage. Same with the 20kg Bags of ice I used to have to handle in pairs when I worked in fish shops.

screw that

one job i had for a day was moving lead ingots around for a marquee – terrible

i used to do agricultural work lifting the rectangular bales of hay and straw

the worse job was working with horses

i don’t like jobs where I’m moving weight around – its not good for you

Mmmm. That’s quality opiates for you.

I had a bit of an incident involving a 9” grinder and got Oxycodone (same stuff I think). I took myself off it after a few days as it turned me into a drooling idiot.

If I’m going to be an idiot, I’ll do it with dignity.

Sleepy? I imagine you were. I could hardly communicate. I just sat on the couch staring into the middle distance. Not a lot was going in and there was even less coming out.

I’ve heard it’s commonly called “hillbilly heroin”. If that’s what a hit is like, you can leave me out. I’ll take my oblivion from other substances thank you very much.

I wasn’t that bad. I could function ok. In fact I took the time to write a rather detailed research paper that involved quite a lot of maths that I usually get too impatient to follow through. I even presented the paper at a conference, hobbling up to the podium with my walking stick.

It obviously affects me more. I was useless for anything.

I could hardly wipe my arse – when I could have a crap. Opiates aren’t exactly good for the digestion,

I must ask Mrs T just how long I was on the stuff for. It seemed like a couple of days. Several years down the track, I’m suspecting that it may have been a couple of weeks.

Oh yes. I had lots of problems of that nature! Had to take regular doses of the appropriate stuff and take further measures a needed.

I think that the effects can be pretty variable.

My mother used to go beserk on morphine. I have been called to help control all 37kg of her when it took 3 nurses to strap her into a chair in a sort of straight jacket thing.

Update

I saw the Dr last wed/thu

he prescribed celebrex and Panadeine Extra, used together, and voltaren cream

I stopped using the voltren tablets as they conflict with the celebrex

I’m using Ibuprofen in between the Panadeine Extra and Im getting some sleep now, after 6 days of no sleep I was feeling a bit strange, Im still in pain, but its manageable now

I’m doing some stretching exercises, from one of the links above, and working on my car which has a few electrical problems

Been wondering for a while of such a thing can cause an itchy patch of skin. I have an itchy patch which has nothing unusual on the surface, is a little less sensitive than other skin, about one-third way down spine, slightly to left of spine. Drives me bit crazy sometimes. Keeps the wife busy, or you’ll seee me rubbing on something like a horse.

No dry skin or anything unusual on surface.

Given the amount of falls from motoribikes and horses and god knows what else since, well, before I could walk likely, I am thinking possible nerve damage. Dunno.

try this

start taking perhaps a quarter of a level teaspoon of magnesium sulphate in some water/ juice every day

stop using all products with SLS on your body and its fellow travellers (google SLS) its found in toothpaste, shampoo, body washes, car wash, laundy liquid. truth be known this is what makes people itch, it absorbs across the skin into the blood , then we sweat it out – causing the itch (they use SLS in animal testing to inflame skin)

start taking a multi vitamin (vit B)

google something called GA cream , you can get it from someone called Amanda stewart – the husband came up with it (herbalist). very effective, its the non steroid way to strengthen skin. I used it to cure chemical dermatitis in an hour. I have used it recently to treat someone with an on going skin problem (weeping skin, etc).

do all these things then get back to me
