So, now there is a fire just West of Hamilton. For those who know the area, I gather it is near Nigretta. Probably just as well there is no field shoot for the Archery club today……that’s where they shoot.

Well, back down to 40C and there is some cloud cover. I was expecting things to look worse out there, but all in all they are not too bad. I guess that is because there has been very little wind. Only the dessication of the sun to deal with. This zucchini looks OK, although I couldn’t really say the same for the strawberries in front of it:

 photo Zucchini12Feb14_zps773a05a1.jpg

But the yacon looks terrible:

 photo Yacon2Feb14_zps324449dc.jpg

And this tomato is OK too. They will all get a bit of water tonight.

The yacon will pick up with a bit of water :) Mine went crisp after the four day heatwave. All leaves burnt and it looked like a garden of green sticks. It’s leafing up again.

>>The yacon will pick up with a bit of water :)<<

Thanks. I put it in last year, but it really didn’t grow much and didn’t flower. This year it is looking much healthier and is trying to flower. Although burnt off on the tips. Anyway, I’m intending to dig and harvest/divide this year. We’ve not eaten it before, it’s one of my trials to see if we like it. We’ve been picking the Cape Gooseberries of late, although not very many. They are pretty tart. I think they would make better jam than fresh pick.

Can I just say…..it was very pleasant wandering along the beach at Killarney with the dogs, paddling in the water, breathing nice cool air.

Now doing mundane washing and bedmaking and stuff. Then I shall get comfy and read some journals.

This is the main beach (not us in the Internet photo I found):

We were beyond those rocks – which are at the boat ramp – and around that far point. It used to be offlead for dogs up there, but now it is on lead only because there are some sort of rare plovers nesting in the sand. Not to worry. After Easter the main beach is open slather for dogs, so we’ll go again then and let them have a run. You can, if you want, walk all the way to Port Fairy from Killarney along the beach. Although this picture is pointed towards Warrnambool, the opposite direction.

Killarney is an excellent clean safe beach.

Today is interesting. When I left to go to a job it was 20.6ºC The wind was blowing forty Aholes. Now the temp has dropped back to 18ºC. First morning for a while that I’ve seen that. There is storm activity up near White Cliffs. Must be a doozy.

Was there a lemon wipeout or something? Most in the shops are the imported ones and anything up to a dollar a lemon, and they’re in season!?

Several people in ticky tacky boxes with no garden are asking for them. The gardeners with lemons are quick to charge for theirs too, around 50c ea.

No problems with Eureka lemons. Others are less often in season.

We are still supplying the local cafe and pub from our tree. Not as many at the moment, but enough coming along. My limes are a bit slow, but there will be a few of them in a month or so. The lemon tree has been in for 10 years or so. The lime is only a couple of years old. My orange is even younger.

In Casterton the citrus are alive, but not happy, pointing leaves down, leaves getting crunchy. They each got a couple of buckets of water yesterday when I was there, I’m just hoping they can hang in. The orange there has fruit on it. The lime has none. The tangelo has just a few green ones. The mandarin is holding onto a dozen or so.

I was on one of my BSS sites and there was this toilet brush and holder going for $10. New in the box. It looked ok but no one else was interested in it. Then later on I saw it again and thought why not..it will be a flash looking thing for Katie and Leighs home when it’s built. So I said sold. The lady said fine, all yours. Then I decided to look it up, it was new in the box still unopened so it had the brand etc.

Well I nearly fell over. It retails for $179!! and has a warranty for 7 years!!! for what? a loo brush?

I’ve been going to bed at 4 am, my sleep pattern well and truly out of whack.

Massive dramas with GS. Way too long and detailed to go into, but I nearly got arrested, I’m talking a hairs breadth… I told them do it! go on! Nah, gutless wonders didn’t want me telling them how to do their job!, they just wanted to shut me up so got in their cars and left. I’m still too wound up to sleep. I do have to attend a ‘lite’ hearing to explain why I defied a court order (for GS on his behalf), this Monday.
I don’t know what ‘lite’ means, maybe informal? I don’t know, never had to attend one before.

And the celery muncher, aka grandson Bo Bo, has been picking the vege. Ate my capsicums too. Worse than the chooks!

Slashing funding to disability services is the root cause of the dramas. It’s going to get worse. Long story short, re the police, GS ended up in their establishment but no call was made to mental health, he was treated as neurotypical, avo slapped on him for a barney with his girlfriend. He couldn’t go home. They told him to go to mum and dads. They escorted him to the train station and saw him off. The first thing I know is when he rings me to pick him up at the w’bee station.

Me goes in like a raging bull, he is disabled, has an ID and he has confessed to things he could not possibly have done. I told them, he will answer your questions with what he thinks you WANT to hear, not the truth. Go on test him, and READ HIS DAMN FILE!! I got the truth out of him. The girlfriend threatened self harm and picked up a knife. GS got angry.
They asked him ‘did you have the knife in your hand?’ He answered yes, but didn’t add it was because he took it off her and put it on the sink.

I told them I am taking him home and I don’t give a rats A%$# what this bit of paper says. I did that, then took the gf to her mothers. Without any problems.
Now I have to explain my actions?

The fact you’re not in quod may indicate the coppers weren’t seriously worried by you…however that you’ve got to rock up to a magistrate is probably where the matter should be for a resolution, obviously the coppers in the case were out of their depths…not explaining myself very well but I dips me lid to you…

oh I hope this gets sorted out quickly and sensibly. I think a lite hearing is a procedure pending an actual lawsuit. I guess it will depend on the outcome of the hearing whether you get charged or not. Do you have access to legal advice?

Status symbol? I thought that only applied to houses and flash cars, jewellry. It’s not even a good design..the metal lid of the contraption is part of the handle and if you went at the loo bowl, like I do, it would scratch the bowl. A stupid waste of money by the haves’.

I got a gorgeous blouse at the op shop for a fiver! Pretty and very comfy :D

The toilet brush you have when you pay someone else to do the cleaning. It is for show rather than for actual use. Like those who buy a really expensive kitchen and eat out every night.

I have a smart mouse. And I don’t mean one that operates my computer. The cheeky blighter runs around my lounge room in front of me and has so far evaded capture. I have tried peanut butter (usually a no fail,) fresh coconut (who could resist that?) and cheese. He ignores the traps altogether. Any other suggestions?

The rest of his family are here. I put poison blocks behind the fridge, washing machine and stove. We only know they have arrived when Max goes springs into action chasing something invisible, washing basket of folding gets knocked sideways, chairs get pushed out from the table, bin goes over, etc.

Just a heads up for Victorian drivers. Check the expiry of your licence. VicRoads omitted to send out reminders to 15,000 drivers whose licences are due to expire by Tuesday. It is up to you to make sure you have a current licence reminder or not and you could face penalties.

I have managed to capture the rest of his family over the past couple of weeks, but this one seems to have wised up or has no sense of smell.

I have Da Boyz here, Sonny Joe mowed and whippersnipped yesterday, including the stand of green panic that I left down the back for the chookens to hide in…so now they’re all under the shelter of the old dead mango…we have run out of whippersnapper cutter (cord?) so as far as I’m concerned that will have to wait until I get some more $$$, as I spent up for a fortnight yesterday but think I’ll be right for a month…

$:($

It is generally agreed, that except for the lack of a directional chute at the back of the mower, it’s an easier article to work with than the more modern mower “at home”.

Eventually the chainsaw is coming back out and I will attack the saplings that have come back thicker than ever, down the street scape of the back block…I must advise that this “footpath” is about 4 – 5 feet above the street so nobody walks on it, however the niceties must be observed. The trick would be, I think, to constantly apply Round-up to the cuttings as they throw out suckers. That should knock them eventually.

We have Manu and Puta here…Puta led Shadow astray, came home herself and we ended up driving around looking for Shadow (at 12:30 am), who came home by himself whilst we were out. Manu was delighted to be reunited with her teddy, Shadow is thrilled with the company. Nerfetiti has disappeared. Manu ate two eggs and brought the plastic nest egg up for show and tell. The chookens are not best pleased because Puta follows Pancho around when he’s trying to “work” and she even followed some hens around, for fun.

Sonny Joe is going up to check my gutters. As it’s completely cloud-covered, he should be able to do this barefoot?

Mrs B is not back yet, hope she is out of hospital (down south)…If this weather keeps up I may not have to turn J1’s hose on again… J2 is still going to hospital, having tests and getting injections of iron…poor bugg*r…

Good morning. It has cooled down a bit now, it stayed around 23 all night. Now quite a comfy 20 degrees. The wind is getting up though. I took the risk and planted out 4 baby lettuces in a protected part of the veggie garden this morning. Hoping they can make it.

A bit of excitement here at the closing hymn at church as half the congregation rushed out on the news of a local fire, just down the road from me. All under control though. The firies here are quick. It hasn’t even made the website (yet.) Got a bag ready just in case. The cinema is our local Safer Place.

I am not anywhere near any of the major fires trichome. We did have a small one nearby yesterday but was quickly dealt with. A fellow was filling his water pump with petrol when it caught fire so he rang for help straight away and they had 10 units onto it promptly.

We are still OK here in South West Victoria. There is still a fire dragon sitting in the Grampians, 40-50km North of where we are. It could rouse, but fortunately so far the winds have been kind.

I think it helped that there were no other fires nearby for the fireys to attend. Although some of them went on to do an overnight at one of the fires further afield.

Morning green ones.
I’m glad the fires didn’t get too close BG. What a scare though. The town’s in a smoke haze at the moment- the smell is awful. I thought I was doing well to hang out heaps of bedding cotton blankets and towels to dry overnight. Now they really stink. But at least the fire isn’t close.

The meeting yesty, re GS, went very well. I wasn’t ‘in trouble’ as I thought, in fact the only question I was asked was ‘ what can we do to avoid this happening again’. That was good, because it was the only question I wanted to hear. There’s now an alert in place should the constabulary have a need to visit /pick him up. First call, mental health.

Not at all pleasant outside. I’ve only got a few patients today, so I’m doing paperworky stuff. I’ve just turned on the portable aircon in my room and the waiting room.

I took some buckets of water out for the citrus before. I’m really hoping they get some rain in the next few days. They will appreciate it. And there is a drawback to putting out dishes of water for the birds (and snakes)…..the gorgeous red rosellas come in. And then they rifle through the apple trees for good measure!

And there is a drawback to putting out dishes of water for the birds (and snakes)…..the gorgeous red rosellas come in. And then they rifle through the apple trees for good measure!

They probably do that anyway.. You may only have noticed them because you put out water.

I spent all yesterday asleep, well most of it…the bed I was on is not the best bed for spending the day in, my lower back is very tired…just saying, not complaining…amazed how tired a very sore throat can make you, but I’m good now…a few more salt water gargles and I’ll have the throat under control…

We’ve got carrot thinnings to have with our duck for tea tonight:

 photo Carrots16Feb14_zps1695ed42.jpg

And I’ve just put in some out of date seed for two colour corn. Very late, but we might just manage to get some cobs late in the season. And the seed might not even germinate anyway. Nothing lost by trying.

Finally got around to fixing up Chester’s old cage for the cockateils. What with the hot weather and everything I have not done anything active for ages but decided now that it has cooled down a bit I better get onto it.

I have moved Roly in and am letting the birds settle down from the panic it has all caused before I move the other three in as well. Roly hasn’t moved up from the floor yet although he has moved out of the corner he was in!

The other three babies have been transferred with much shrieking and biting and flapping. Everyone is in shock.

I was just thinking about you after I moved Tink down to the main roost…Oh well moving them in the evening means they’ve got tonight to disremember where they used to be…have the parents quit procreating for the time being?

They did lay a couple of eggs but I removed them and there have been no more. The new arrangements are going to be interesting to say the least. They have a lot more room to use their wings but mum and dad are still next door.

Good afternoon Gardeners. I am pottering. I’m doing some rearranging in my veggie patch. Making use of some more space that has been ‘lawn’, except the grass won’t grow. So it will be subdivided. I’ve killed off the grass and this morning I dug over – if you can call turning over about 2cm digging – a long thin bit down the middle. I’ve planted some telephone peas in there and oversown with some old clever clover seed I seem to have had forever. So next Summer that will be one of my long lines of tomatoes. There is another bit of grass in that area which I have just sprayed……..I’ll use some potatoes to break that one up over Winter. It’s very sheltered, so shouldn’t have trouble with the frost there.

Arvo/ evening from me too. I’ve been busy cooking and catching up on freezer meals for us and GS. It’s grandson Bo Bo’s birthday tomorrow, so there’s also some salads in the wings and a mud cake. Other bits and pieces and treats.
Eldest girl is on a plane shortly from bris to melb and I will pick her up at tulla at 11.45. If I can stay awake!

I picked up the eldest girl, quick cuppa and catch up, then took her to Mrs. daughters place, she is staying there for four days before going back.

The hatching chick isn’t out yet.
I have a busy day, eye check appointment, vet appt for max, sort party foods for BoBo, and take him for his learners permit, and somewhere in all that the Ara chooks will arrive. Their quarantine pen is all ready.
I’m stuffed. time to fall into bed.

Does anybody have the current location of what used to be the ABC TechTalk forum, please? I don’t have it on this new computer. It seems one can rent an entire MS Office Suite, for up to 5 private computers, paying either by month or per annum. This sounds good to me as I need Access and MS Office Outlook in order to complete some TAFE Certificates.

Wondering how Happy Potter’s got on with her planned cookery course….was it pastry making?

Back from the dentist, the wretched tooth was cracked and now have a temporary filling until I can get a crown. And a gold one at that because the tooth is too high for a ceramic crown and gold is thinner and stronger.
Six needles I tell ya, six! It takes more to numb the bottom jaw than the top. Now they tell me!

Chook stuff to do now and hopefully get some pics of those aras. Max is in the bad books.. I was sorting and wrapping some left over party foods for the man to take to GS, and the dog gets tangled in my legs and the containers went flying across the floor, spilling food everywhere. It had to go in the bin.
Naughty dog!
I nearly went sprawling. Now going to have to get a baby gate to keep him out of the kitchen area.

We had a storm go over with all the bells and whistles and a big dump of rain, looked like that helicopter dropped it’s water bucket over the house. Gutters overflowed, patio under water in minutes- it was lapping at the back door. Mad scramble to rescue backpacks and shoes.
The power went off and I could not find the blimmin heat packs for the incubater eggs, argh..then remembered, der, I have a gas cooker.. find a lighter, grab a pot out, boil water, find a hot water bottle.. phew.
It’s day 18 for the eggs anyway so I took the turning tray out and popped the eggs back in to hatch.. and noticed one had already started pipping. Early bird.

Powers back on now.

Morning. It’s a housework day, vacuuming and laundry and tidying pantry and stuff.

We picked up a nilfisk industrial vacuum cleaner for a fiver on a bss site. It was near new but the pipes and the cleaning head had been lost in a move. Well, our old vac’s pipe fitted, yay, and off the man went with this cyclonic sucker getting dogs hair out from under the fridge. Oh yeah!
It also blows..well he just had to blow the dust out of our computers fans didn’t he? created a massive dust storm inside! ‘Cough cough omg can you do that outside please!! lol. He did vacuum the whole house though. Bonus.

Off to have brekky then load the washer.

The organic acv? It was recommended by my rheumatologist to help lower inflammation and to boost good gut flora ph balance. I had the lapband op in 2007, well before I know about organic acv.

No, pallets are light on around here. I never see any. I used sheets of concrete reinforcing mesh to make vertical ‘walls’ for pumpkins and cucs. I scored a six metre piece from a farm for free and we had to bolt cut it in half to get it home. The climbing fruits are doing really well.

Yes it’s bitter. I wasn’t going to tell you that, lol. I got used to it though and now plain water tastes weird. I make my own acv in a beer brew kit barrel. It stays under my sewing room desk with a hessian bag slipped over it.

Yes it’s bitter. I wasn’t going to tell you that, lol. I got used to it though and now plain water tastes weird. I make my own acv in a beer brew kit barrel. It stays under my sewing room desk with a hessian bag slipped over it.

I was taking ACV with Olive Leaf Extract for a while in water. On their own both of them tasted pretty yuck, but a teaspoon of each together in water was strangely palatable!

I don’t like the sound of burbling lungs, pardon the pun. Could mean an infection.

Me neither. Especially the ‘breathing shallow’ part.

The “breathing shallow” was because the rib hurt to draw a good breath…I’m coughing now, a little bit, so that’s an improvement…

Did you have a fall?

How is the rib hurt?

Do your lungs make a wheezing sound when you stand and swing your arms in a twisting body motion as if you are running. Do it in a quiet room so you can hear.

The pain may be referred pain from damage to the place where the rib joins the spinal column.
I was asking about the wheezing noise because this is how my lungs used to sound when I had a hole in one lung.

I know what you mean by referred pain…I went to swat a mosquito on my arm last night and found it was 3 inches away from where I felt the sting!

Feeling much better today, the rib is just tender now and I only need be careful when lying down…hurts when I cough but that’s nothing…just a bit of a phlegmy cough but that’s infrequent, just every couple of hours…took the dog for his walk last night and got interviewed by the Sarge and a new feller…the sarge was laughing his head off…then they went on to “have a chat” to some happy campers hiding down one of the gravel side roads…but the rib got better as I walked so I’m saying it was ligament damage…thanks for your interest tho’…

I reckon it is all about control and $$$. Community gardens are not a bio-threat, but they are people that are outside the normal production system and are not buying their fruit and veg and therefore they cannot make money out of them or control them. The more people that grow their own, the smaller the commercial market becomes.

The one thing that bothers me about growing my own is, what happens to all those hard working vege farmers? Then I figure I don’t grow enough to be completely independent. I say to myself, maybe I should buy Ardmona canned fruit? But then I don’t buy canned fruit period so it is not like I am buying the imports instead.

A goshawk is almost identical to a sparrowhawk. Slightly larger is the goshawk. Otherwise they are difficult to tell apart. The females of both species are larger than the males. I doubt though that a goshawk would be terribly interested in chasing chooks.

Just had a lovely day with my son who was visiting. Took him for a scenic drive: south to Mansfield, then the windy road to Whitfield including a stop at Power’s Lookout, continued on through the King River Valley and turned off for Milawa where we had a lovely lunch at the cheese factory, back to the Hume Freeway and home.
