Subject: Worm Wee
Hopefully one of you worm experts can help with this question.
My worm farm has been going nicely for many years and I have regularly collected the worm wee.
Of late the wee is very much paler. I’m not putting any extra water and am puzzled as to why.
Could the worms have made drills down which the water moves and nowhere else so the wee is becomming weaker?
The bottom layer is due to be emptied and started back on the top so I will look then but if that is not the case does anyone have any clues?

can’t help directly – I collect very little wee – but mainly make the “wee” using handfuls of the farm contents – quickly strain and dump the workers and etc back into the farms.
I feed them a fair bit of horsepoo, poultry layer pellets – and all scrapings of the poultry feed bowls (terra cotta bowls) before their weekly scrub , any spare duck and chook eggs that I still have on hand a month after laid – and the worms are breeding very well – through all levels – not just on top mostly – except when I withhold their tucker a bit to harvest the “casts” .Oh, also my vacuum cleaner (sorted) contents, floor sweepings all feathers and broken down fines from poultry shed floor – partly composted Hysorb. I also “cross-populate” the various farms and add new ones from my compost bins as I sort them – that is the handfuls that I don’t feed to the ducks.

I have posted these before when consulting Lucky about some mites. I have lots of large plat pots/tubs – especially the self-watering ones are good – or the insets from them on the bottom, line with shade cloth and dump overflows from main farms in. The biggest home-made one is a plastic garbage can – but I feel that shallower containers are easier to manage and not so heavy to lift. Easy to to harvest the worms though – if I put the garbage bin lid on and no layer of other covering. I always take taps out of the commercial ones and leave a bucket under the open area to freely drain – that is how the farm people that sold me my initial bucketful of worms did it. They fed their worms mainly horsepoo and lucerne chaff. It was part of Special School farm – and selling compost worms was part of their operation. I have an unlimited supply of horsepoo from a friend with 2 horses and any visit between us is accompanied by a transfer of (poultry) feedbags – empty and poofull!
The manuals for Can-o-Worms and Worm Factory (both by Reln plastics) are essentially the same except for the titles and covers:
The WormFarm Management book was a gift from a friend and while partly directed to commercial or large-scale worm farming, much is also applicable to home set-ups.

Thanks for all of that cackles.
I haven’t taken the tap out but leave it constantly open. Taking it out may be the go though as it should drain very easily.
I may also start another farm and cross polinate too. Can worms become inbred?
A ‘worm man’ told me to microwave the vegie scraps to soften them before giving them to the worms. I have been doing this for quite a long time now. I wonder if this could be affecting the colour of the wee? I also give them grass and prunings that I have chopped up with the mower as well as home made compost. Will add some cow poo soon.

Hhmmm, I always thought if the wee water is lighter in colour either of the 2 have happened…
Too much water ( through being out in the rain or watered too quickly on a hot day …cooling it down)
or
The worms aren’t as active in their bedding area and not as much casting has made its way down in the water tray. So not as much casting to “colour” the worm wee……..
Other people’s thoughts on the second reason would be welcome:)

Good afternoon all.
I removed the bottom layer of my worm farm and then found I could also take the next one too – I seem to have had a drastic reduction in my worm popoulation. I went to the toy shop to get a top up of worms and found it cost $60 for a tub of 1000!!! Is that the normal price or am I a victim once again of the old catch cry ‘FREIGHT’?

Funny, I’ve just been looking up worm prices here in Perth :)
The prices I’ve seen this morning are $40 for 1000, $70 for 2000.

I think I’ll Try Nth Qld or Nth WA. Will do an internet search. Thanks again for your very kind offer though.

if you still have some worms, then they will breed up again with regular feeding I would think.

Thanks bg I was thinking about that. I’m just not sure how long they take to breed up to good numbers.
I’ve just done a tiny internet search and found 1000 worms for $33.50 freight free to anywhere in Oz.

orchid40… I’ve made a new worm farm in readiness for the new arrivals. I figured that if the snails are actually the problem in my current farm I would keep them separated. I might just put a few in the old one to liven them up.
I’ve made the new one out of a large plastic pot. I’ve drilled a few more holes in the bottom and quite a few around the sides.
It’s lined with shadecloth and fits perfectly over one of those pots with the reservior in the bottom and the the hole in the side.
The lid is a perfect fit which is a plastic water saucer.
A larger pot will fit onto the first one when its full.
This pyramid actually gets bigger as it goes up so I’ve stabilised it by putting the first pot and reservoir pot in a plastic crate.
When your babies arrive I’ll take a photo and post it. Hopefully they won’t have too much jet lag!

Mr BG has been waiting on a parcel from England. Got home to find the PO card saying it is at the PO. Rang Mr BG so in his lunch time he popped around to the PO. Rang me to say it wasn’t there. Checked the card again and realised 1. he was at the wrong PO and 2. it was too early. He asked me if I could pick it up as he had used up his lunch time so after taking Alex to the vet I went round and handed them the card. The lady disappeared for about 5 mins and came back and said she hasn’t found it yet but will have check on the computer. Another 5 mins she came back saying still can’t find it so better ring the information number. Was standing at the front of the store trying to talk to information who was impossibly faint, when the lady came running up waving a piece of paper in her hand. It was a note from the driver saying that after he left the card, someone came and signed for the parcel, but he couldn’t retrieve the note again. Well that explained why it wasn’t at the PO. I rang #2 daughter who had been home all day and she didn’t know anything about it. I asked her to look on #1 son’s desk and Mr BG’s desk in case #1 son had signed for it and left it there. Not there. I then rang #1 son and asked if he had signed for the parcel (thinking here that a stranger had walked up and claimed it). “Yes,” he said. “Where is it?” I asked. “In my bag,” he said. AAARRRGGHHHH!!!! I suggested it would have been a good idea to ring one of us and let us know! Could have saved both of us a lot of running around!

You’re not wrong Lucky. If they were kept fairly cool there’s a chance they’ll be alive, but I doubt it. Although I made airholes in the container there would still be a limited amount of oxygen :(

Back from The Toyshop and what a shock the elf & I got looking at worms in buckets.
For starters the cardboard boxes have been replaced with white plastic seal tubs and the prices are $59 & $95 …………I know the $95 was correct as I was staggered at the price hikes.
These buckets reminded me of the worms in transit on this thread.
Anyway this lady was going to buy a bucket of them and I said out loud…“OMG your not going to pay that price are you??? What a rip off”…..
Got talking and she’s coming with her partner on Saturday to collect some worms from me. I’ll give her a demo on how to care for them and photocopy my booklet off for her as well. Just moved into their new house…… want to help the planet.
I just can’t bare/bear the thought of having all my worms and that lady paying those prices……

sounds like someone is taking advantage of people becoming eco-aware. Did you know that there is a term coined now for companies that promote themselves or their products as being green, but really aren’t? It’s called “greenwashing”.

WOW – that is definitely outrageous! As you said, they’re jumping on the bandwagon. People like us and millions of others who are trying to do their bit for the planet are being taken advantage of AGAIN. It’s B******* disgusting.
Good on you Lucky for what you’re doing, she’s a lucky lady to have been there when you were.
I’m even more pleased my worms survived their journey!
Its like food, all the “good stuff” for people is high in price ….junk is cheap.
I’ll help start anyone who wants a worm farm up, any way I can………

That would be me too! I nearly always end up talking to people in Bunnings ….and in other stores sometimes too. Reminds me when we used to go from the country to Sydney to visit grandparents and would chat away to people on buses etc – stood out as non-city people… lol.
I chat to passers by all the time if I am in the front garden and one day startled a young man of Indian-subcontinent origin by asking if he was on his way home and when he said yes, pulled a couple of fresh eggs out of my pocket for him, that I couldn’t be bothered making a special trip inside with and were in danger of being broken where they were…He accepted them as I still get a grin when I see him. I am just along the street from Bond Uni – and they have a English as a second language centre there so I see quite a few different people.

I’ll remember that expression! It is very apt isn’t it and I think there is a fair bit of it around! I see ads on TV for “ethical investments” etc but if you do some research it is mainly a bit of lip service…
Like the words of the moment. Everything is either “fresh” or “natural.” I’ve seen it used in the most ridiculous ways.

Just a word to the wise. When it comes to beauty or comestic products there is little legal omph (sheesh can’t think) behind using fresh, natural, organic etc. If one product, even if it’s only 1%, is natural, they can splash natural all across the product. You can pick up a shampoo that is 99% petroleum derivatives and 1% lemon juice and it can say it’s natural. Always check the ingredients list.
Bit like all the products that say “No MSG” and then have all the other flavour enhancers that are almost as bad (any product number from 620 to 625).

Oh I went for some Italian parsley and dolomite lime.
Mr Y thinks yer a corker Lucky! (I get my exercise of an evening walking back and forth to tell him all the goings-on here.)
I could’ve sent you a stack of Italian/flat-leaf parsley seeds. Holdfast sent me heaps a couple of years ago, and they’re still viable – the parsley jungle outside the back door is proof. Even Veg Gardener has germinate some – do you want some? (better reply via email, I might not be around for a day or two and could miss the reply if I get behind, ta)

In the shade under the trees sounds like a good spot for a rhubarb plant. Maybe #10 could go there once the trees grow a bit and there’s good shade in summer?!

They are beautiful. They are ALL very much alive and active, ranging from big fat juicy adults to thread-like babies.
Some of them had escaped the plastic box but were well contained within the cardboard box.
They certainly look like they’ve come from a good home. Lovely manners, clean, well behaved………
Thank you so much orchid40. I’ll look after them very well. I’ll even get them to send you a postcard. :)))))))))))))

The frog was originally hand painted and then printed onto hot plate stands using the process they use to put designs on cups etc so it will withstand heat.

oops – went to look up in my little Oxford dictionary that “epic” was what I meant in the middle of the post and didn’t check before submitting. BTW one definition given is “adjective – narrating heroic deeds”, ‘‘of heroic type or scale” or as a noun “epic poem” so that’s close enough although I didn’t mean to repeat the word. :P

orchid40… I’ve made a new worm farm in readiness for the new arrivals.
I’ve been faddeling about with photobucket so not sure what will appear.
