“ Annual mammography in women aged 40-59 does not reduce mortality from breast cancer beyond that of physical examination or usual care when adjuvant therapy for breast cancer is freely available. Overall, 22% (106/484) of screen detected invasive breast cancers were over-diagnosed, representing one over-diagnosed breast cancer for every 424 women who received mammography screening in the trial.”

In what way? All abnormals would be reported back to the woman. Then it’s up to her and her doctor to decide where to go next. Don’t forget it’s a big industry.

Only slightly tic.

I know of one person who found a lump a few months after a scan had taken through the public system. Doctor obtained the scans and there was obviously something there, but it was not followed up because they’d apparently “used up their month’s referrals”.

But I will read your link when I have time.

No such thing as “month’s referrals”. Someone is bullshitting.

All MMGs are reported to either the ordering doctor, or to the doctor the patient nominates if she’s a walk-in. Then it’s up to the doctor who receives the report to act on it. All referrals received by public hospitals are considered category 1, and seen ASAP. Breast surg is often the only surgical unit that has regular set lists over the whole Xmas / New Year period.

Well that is a lot for no gain.

The fellow on the radio said the procedure also introduced health risks.
