I know nothing about cars, and I don’t know if you’ve found what you were looking for. But as I walked past Casterton Car Care at lunchtime I saw a dark green (with canopy) twin cab Triton GLX (2.4 16valve) with a hand written note on the window that said “$2,000 as is”. I have no idea what “as is” means in this case, and I didn’t go in and ask. The panels look straight to me. And the paint is not all falling off or anything.

If you want to ask further questions, it’s at

Casterton Car Care,
39 McPherson St.,
Casterton, Victoria

(03) 5581 2800

The fellow who runs the garage is Murray.

If it’s the 2.4 turbo model be careful. The engines are a bit delicate.

OK thanks Buffy. You got me in as soon as you mentioned dark green with canopy.
This was the colour of mine.. Dark metallic green, with canopy.

16 valve? sounds like Mazda rather than Triton but it is still worth a look

I’m not so much of petrol head as a diesel guzzler but beggars cannot be choosers.

“As is”

May mean a lot of things but usually what it means is, take it or leave it.

Rego may be out or nearly out, repairs may need to be done. quite a few variables on the above.

I copied the writing/branding off the back of the vehicle and it said…Triton GLX (2.4 16valve)

Ta.. thanks.

It simply means petrol engine rather than diesel.

Well. Today was the day I had to really start on making a decision about what I’ve been looking at in the way of vehicles. The loan car has to go back tomorrow, the insurance still hasn’t paid up. So I was in a bit of a dilemma as I’m working four farms at the moment and I need a vehicle. However I was almost walking out the door to go looking and there is a knock on my door. A good neighbour I know well was standing there. G’Day Bill, I said. What can I do for you? He said, “Anne told me that you might be interested in my ute. I am in the throes of getting a new vehicle and this one has to go. It has been serviced with a new oil filter every 5,000 Km and I’ve done this and this including an extra air filter to prolong the life of the main air filter. It’s got 11 months rego on it.. and all that sort of stuff. It is a 2005 Holden Rodeo diesel (Isuzu motor) twin cab with canopy, roo bar driving lights and also has electric brakes for towing caravan.. Also coming with it are a tonneau cover and bar, a full drum of oil and two new oil filters, a new fuel in line water condensation filter. One problem was that he said he needed it for the next two weeks between now and when they take delivery of the new car but when I went for a drive with him to see his other half, Anne said .. “ only needs it tomorrow. He can ask me for a ride otherwise.” The other problem is that he asked $13,000. He told me the trade-in value was $7,000. I may need to try and talk him down and I’ll need a bit of bridging finance to seal the deal.. IF I DO CHOOSE TO BUY IT.

But otherwise., it has been serviced extremely well and is in tip top condition. Anne has a book with everything that has been done to it written down. she’s fastidious like that.

Decisions.. decisions..

It’s pricey because it’s dual cab and diesel, but he’s asking just a tad too much.
Offer him 10k.

Make sure you get a steering lock, gps tracker, car alarm, engine immobilizer etc

steering locks can be a pain, but they are cheap

dont make a habit of leaving keys/wallet in the vehicle

is the outside sensor light working?

That’s what I was thinking.. If I could put 10K cash on the table it would be hard for him to resist but he is an old friend. His wife cleans for my MiL. She’s been a trojan of help.

It has an engine immobilizer. I don’t yet know about the rest. No the sensor light hasn’t been fixed as of yet. I’ve been making sure it isn’t easy to get into house and shed and other stuff.

Wallet hasn’t left my sight since the last event.

It is just bullshit. I purchased that car in 1995 brand new from a reputable dealer and it has always had the same registration the same insurance.. Now they tell me the VIN number doesn’t match any of their records and that’s why the insurance claim hasn’t even been put through. It is all because the assessor at the wreckers is too old and stupid to ask his own workers to drag the car down from the heap and rip the bonnet open to check the plates that have always been photographed and on their records. If this car was rebirthed it was rebirthed either by Mitsubishi or somewhere between there and the sales floor. It is just BS.

All I can say is this. I feel very let down by the whatever body it is that oversees such things. If I can buy a brand new car off the dealers floor that is found to have wrong numbers almost 20 years later then how many other cars were sold as reputable car sales have the same?

Certainly is causing me alarm.

They are trying to tell me that it is because I cash d the number plates in.. I said.. “well they were all that was left and they were mine to return. The car was stolen and burned. I wasn’t about to allow someone else to steal the number plates.”

The other thing was thta the wreckers and the insurance company knew the car and the owner.. The same as when the police say“the family was known to us.” It was all on their computer. WTF didn’t they ring me three weeks ago and say, Houston, there is a problem?

Anyway, it pays to keep original documents. We are faxing off copies of the original warranty and purchase documents from the original purchase, the original registration and green slip documents as well as the receipts for cancellation of registration and green slip.

The NRMA said that upon sighting these documents they’ll pay the money into our bank account.

However, what happens to the flight of fancy about the possible re-birthing of the car they were trying to accuse me of? Who knows? Maybe it was an administrative error, maybe the car was actually diddled about with back at the time before I purchased it and the original perpetrators can no longer be chased down? The company I purchased the car from has changed hands three or four times since then and one of the principals was charged with fraud for doubling and tripling financial stuff on car finance so it could be possible that dodginess was occurring.
