muscle relaxation during sleep causes the head to flop
FTL!
We don’t do their dirty work any more.
Nobody knows, m’lord, nobody knows.
Heat conservation, the exhaled air is discharged through the feathers which keeps the heat loss to a minimum.

I think you’ve got it exactly right. Some birds sleep with their head under their wing. Other birds including some ducks sleep by turning their head around and rest it facing backwards on their back. Pigeons and some small birds such as sparrows sleep their head facing forwards resting down on their shoulders. Some parrots lie down and rest their head on the tree branch that they’re lying on. Other parrots and some owls just let the head flop forwards.
In every case, muscle relaxation of the neck causes the head to flop so the bird has to rest it on something.
If a bird docks its beak under its wing then its head won’t fall off its back when its sleeping, as the beak locks the head in place.
we have already read that some birds don’t go into a full sleep, while others use their bodies to rest on.. but I have to admit, that I have never seen a bird put it’s head under it’s wing to sleep.. only in cartoons.

If you put a chickens head under its wing and wave it around a few times it goes to sleep.

Well you can put it on the round and it will lay there doing nothing until its head sort off falls out from under its wing, it blinks a few times then gets up.

Dunno about the wave thing but…
The last chook I petted slept when under the wing…
Yeah really… and you you could pat it like a dog, happy as Larry.
