Science group, evangelicals push new collaboration

Scientists and Christian evangelicals can collaborate for the good of society but it will take some serious effort, experts said as they launched a new campaign to change perceptions between the two groups.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science and its Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Religion program released a major research project on Sunday (Feb. 16), at the AAAS annual meeting in Chicago, and announced an upcoming series of conferences mixing believers, scientists and many who are both.

I don ‘t know why. When I went to school (and that was a long time ago) the Christians had to actually teach the science and then try and explain why the catechism differed from that.

Sounds pointless to me. Religious believers are dying out and scientists should ignore them.

IMO the best way forward with this is for religion to approach the question of Gods existence with honesty, to admit God is a possibility, if God is a possibility then people can still believe in God as there is scope within the possibility of God existing, then science can accept this possibility and accept their honesty

I think the above paragraph could be better worded, but that’s the best I can do with it.

The trouble is, they are born faster than they die and are usually well indoctrinated.

It wasn’t a bad effort.. At least it is a work in progress.

Not sure about dying out, in some countries there are far more than you could count, plus some are very extreme.

No they’re not, at least in the West. That’s why religious belief is in steady decline throughout the First World.

If the religious people can stop attributing bullshit claims to God, it would be even better.

Yes I agree with that, there is too much conjecture.

Debateable. There’s evidence that education levels are declining or maybe it’s just that people aren’t using their intelligence. For example, last week’s study into declining literacy and numeracy levels in Tasmania.

On that post it is certainly debatable.

I think they mean co-exist

Bubblecar is right

>Scientists and Christian evangelicals can collaborate for the good of society but it will take some serious effort

==

I would like to see religion fade away completely, confined to the past of history
but in the mean time accepting that God exists as a possibility seems one way forward, when so many people still believe in it

List of religious populations

from that link

Christianity 2.1 billion
Islam 1.6 billion
Secular*/Nonreligious*/Agnostic/Atheist ≤ 1.1 billion
Hinduism 1 billion
Chinese traditional religion* -394 million

the list goes on, so there is much work still to be done, when so many people still believe in God and we should not ever get complacent with those who want to see creationism taught in schools, teach it from an historical viewpoint and how people can be fooled etc, so I am for a gentle approach, to gradually steer those towards common sense, not use verbal conflict or use violence,

choosing words is very important, we want more people to see reality for what it is, and accept it for what it is, and not super impose something imaginary over it. Intelligent writers and journalists can do this.

Religion is in decline in western countries, so its good to see people coming to their senses, and not be fooled into 2000 year old story telling, imaginary beings, imaginary spaces and so on.
