I had to turn the power off at the transformer at the end of the street to get out of that site.

Just boiling water for tea over the course of a year uses the entire electricity output of the UK for 20 days? Amazing

Surprising how many people fill an electric kettle to the brim just to make two cups of tea.

I don’t think they took that into account. Assuming on average people boil twice as much water as they need, that would be 40 days UK electricity.

OTOH, if they used waste heat from a nearby power station they could do it without disrupting power supplies at all.

Maybe not unless the tea was made on a flow through system. Otherwise heat losses would prevent the water ever coming to the boil.

And the morning walk down to the power station would get the blood circulating and reduce obesity.

And certainly give your sinuses a good working out if Hazlewood was the closest power station.

Throttling is probably the more appropriate, as long as its virtual.
