This place can’t hold a candle to the SSSF… this is naught but a chat room for a collective of like-minded refugees… It attracts no new members and so will eventually wither and die.
but in the mean time it gives us a place to come and whinge about how glorious the past was as well as talk about cricket…
I don’t miss sssf at all. There are many good science forums out there that don’t put up with nonsense … We have here for nonsense :)

I’d venture to say that this is most likely out of the question. The social science experiment was done and has been dusted.

The ABC is now under the control of the heathens, who hate science and think that the CSIRO is a radical leftist organisation that must be destroyed.
If SSSF is restored it will be under an icon of Tony Abbott’s face, and any mention of AGW, clean energy, IVF and conservation will be deleted by the free thought censors.

SSSF was shut down by the ABC as part of a convenient show to the government that it could do its bit to stifle expression of opinion.
Look at ABC News website, and the ‘have your say’ facility: there’s nothing to identify the stories on which they’ll let people express opinions – the option seems to get appended at random to one or two stories per day (if that), and you discover it at the bottom of the report, designated in a very unobtrusive way.
Then, comments are allowed for only a narrow window of time, and are heavily moderated.
The other day, i not only found the anointed story, but found it inside the time window for comments. I was so excited by my good fortune that i forgot what i wanted to say about the story.
well… i’ll be blunt-ish
I tried to “recreate” the forum but got cried down because it wasn’t “the same” – so none of you can whinge about that as far as i’m concerned.
There is another recreation that I’m sure people frequent/haunt or whatever, but what is done, is done.

I miss the idea, but not the reality.
It was very often just a heaving sack of writhing neurotics and destructive arseholes. When the curtain finally fell, it had been years since Dr. Karl had promoted it, it very rarely attracted new members and the few genuine science questions is tackled were heavily bogged down by people letting their personalities, or history of conflict, get in the way.
I regret that it never fulfilled its potential, and I miss some of the contributors, and I’m sad it went the way it did; but honestly, with the moderation it got, it never had a hope.

The SSSF was a good, immediate forum. You could get intelligent answers quickly. You all know I had trouble with the Gardening Forum a couple of years before they started messing (nicking) with the SSSF. But the format was good and if you learnt to avoid the crappy bits, it was useful and convivial most of the time. Some of the people who have fled to here are people who I don’t engage with on some topics. It’s not that hard to do. And this place does run very smoothly. I suspect the key is that pretty much everyone here has discovered IGNORE mode in their brain. And know how to switch it on.
There are some posters I sort of wish had come across. I don’t know if this forum will die as we die off, or if CB88 may eventually decide not to keep it running. I do resent my ABC destroying a very intelligent and simply formatted information source. But we seem to have sufficient knowledge base here for most things.
There was more contributions to the topics, and less to chat, and from memory there was “Dribbly Bum” and another, was it “Tech Talk”? what we have now is a gynormouse chat forum with scraps of tech stuff, like scraps of scrawny meat in a poor mans stew. Still better than nothing.

Miss some of the posters, Zardos, Zarkov, please feel free to add to this list, and a female poster who used to get a lot of unkind and unnecessary posts, used to have trouble with ants and her dog? or cat?
Anyway, for those interested. I called my local NRMA after the handset died(with a different handset) and got this assurance, that the assessor wasn’t available when the NRMA contacted him and he will be back at work tomorrow but that the assessor isn’t a local and that this could still take some time but that she would get back to me by tomorrow,. The lesson of course is to depend upon your local people to actually be doing something or be lost in the wilderness.

i miss it heaps but it was more important to me personalty in a few ways.
This was were i learned to write.
in 1999 i found the site I posted my Amphibious Monkey thread (an idea that was formed after living on the banks of the Fitzroy river for 3 years)
this was the first time i had written any thing in any form since leaving school (and i didn’t do any writing back then)
At the time i would have had the spelling or writing/reading skills of an 8 or 10 year old.
I am now a senior safety adviser doing his advanced dip in OHS.
none of this would have happened if i did not come across this site and have a desire to communicate in the written language.
So to me she was like that school teacher you got on well with and encouraged you to have a go

In fairness there is more than one success story from the site… It certainly was a very vibrant community that encouraged a lot of discussion and debate… but alas, all good things must come to an end…
When I first came here I was a young man full of vitality and life, keen of eye, strong of back and sharp of mind with a kind disposition to my fallow man.
Now I’m just a broken shell curmudgeon looking for trouble at every opportunity and arguing with people at bus shelters.

once they are adults.. and you don’t have a say over their choices any more… sure, friend it up .. hopefully the relationship has been good enough for them to want to be your friend as much as you might want to be theirs.. but when they are children.. you have to choose, IMO.. you are either their best friend or their parent..
just like a forum… you are either the moderator that has to make the (sometimes harsh) decisions, or you are going to be friends and cop any flack when situations occur ..

just like you can’t be your kids best friend…
I beg to differ on that.. at least I think I am.
it’s hard to be a good parent, and their best friend .. one usually suffers for the other …
(IMO anyway)
As Arts said, once the kids get older, then things change.
and from what I know, she’s a fairly decent parent…..so worth listening to.

Perhaps that’s why boarding schools were invented?

happenstance, tutors cannot be omnipresent.

As Arts said, once the kids get older, then things change.
then you can become their grammar teacher…
“ once the kids get older, then things change.”
exactly. as a parent you don’t change much (WRT how you see and respond to the world) You are a parent as an adult.. they are children who change.. you have to be one thing.. then you can change the relationship as they get older and mature.
I’m not saying you have to be all discipline and then all friend… but there is a certain ratio based on ‘their’ age and maturity levels.
I feel lik I am friends with my kids, in that they come and talk to me about things that bother, interest and/or confuse them. But they also know that there are boundaries that they might not like now, but will benefit them in the future to make smarter choices.
I hope that when they are teenagers I have given them the right tools now.. to make their own smarter choices, and that they’ll still choose to talk to me about their stuff..
I don’t treat them like little children, but I understand that there are concepts they don’t understand now.. because they are not equipped with the life experiences to deal with them.
but if parenting worked the same for everyone, there wouldn’t be as many books about how to do it.

>…..as a parent you don’t change much (WRT how you see and respond to the world).
Does this include the (addition of) kid/s being part of ‘the world’.

do you mean from a non parent to a parent? there is usually a shift in perspective change there.. but as a parent not much (unless some other major catastrophic event happens)

You are speaking of ‘parenting’ changes I gather.
I’d think children coming into ones world changes ones world, so perspective is changed (priorities change).
Not sure about this problem with being a friend of offspring and it getting in the way of parenting (optimal parenting). If you say ‘best friend’ that changes or distorts the proposition somewhat IMO.
Yeah. Best friend is what I said originally. I don’t think you can be best friends and an effective parent with your children.

of its nature a friendship normally grows. Though on occasion it may wither and die.

You can’t be their best friend as well as their best parent
The two relationships are different in their very nature.
Although – I accept that the parent child relationship changes as they get older.
>You can’t be their best friend as well as their best parent

It’s probably a bit of useless distinction in my opinion, but many people would agree with the statement, and they in thinking it useful may get some use from it for their purposes.
I mean you have ‘best’ in there twice, whatever they mean.

Good, better, best, never let it rest, until the good is better and the better best. Thanks Mum and Dad.

neat ideological trojan

well, it’s as much a competition for the parents to be the favourite as the children..
;)
“Best” makes a neat introduction to relative perspectives, comparison and contrast wandering all over the place (the social field, of minds and relationships with others). There’s no rest in it.
I prefer this place
It has the original template/ colour scheme
It has less of the arseholes that used to plague the other place
Apart from witty and dropbear being mouthy towards to me and getting my robust response

Until she can get a decent price for them
From memory. I had several lengthy periods leading up to the shift of SSSF to the new forum.
I had and am a member of several forums with the format similar to the newer format of SSSF which has since become defunct.
Interestingly I have little issue with the other forums but disliked the newer format in place of the old SSSF personally speaking.
As a consequence my interests waned a little due to the newer format and life commitments at that time contributed certainly. My course was not related to the science sector and therefore my thoughts were elsewhere plus life /commitments have and remain to be a dominant feature in life currently.
I have drifted away from science quite a bit in recent times but….. seem to be reigniting an interest once again and hence participation within this forum and net research for subjects of interest and even a recent refresher physics question that got the grey matter revising previously discussed subject on the older SSSF (abc)
Shrug.
Life is full of change. Part of progress is embracing change when required.
