simperthetice => sympathetic

There are lots of ethnic Russians living in Crimea. Crimea became part of Ukraine following the breakup of the USSR. However, according to Wikipedia it

is an autonomous parliamentary republic within Ukraine and is governed by the Constitution of Crimea in accordance with the laws of Ukraine.

The Russians already had a military presence in Crimea, but they have recently augmented their troops there.

or is Russia using this to take on all of Ukraine

Same schtick as they used with Georgia, protecting/liberating ethnic Russians.

Also see: Sudetenland, 1938.

English got the word sympathy from Greek, via Latin. sun = with + pathos = feeling.

it could be that the whole thing has been an operation of the KGB from start to finish.

there must be something that Russia wants so its manufactured an event to allow them to roll their tanks into the Ukraine

its why you have seen NATO tentatively sniffing around, threatening but doing nothing – they are suspicious

Yes, and the Russian Empire before that. For Russians this is the natural order. And like pre-war Germany they are recovering their natural place after an humiliation.

A good article in the Drum today by Tom Switzer.

Yes. The public in the Ukraine wanted closer ties with the west, so forced the pro-Russian president to resign, essentially a bloodless coup. Russia refuses to accept the interim president as the true leader of the Ukraine. Turn then to the Crimea. This peninsula owned by the Ukraine also contains a deepwater Black Sea port for Russia. Russia doesn’t want to lose access to this port because that loss would severely limit Russia’s access to the Mediterranean Sea. Hence the conflict. The fact that the dominant population of the Crimea is ethnic Russian adds to the problem.

By the way. At the end of the cold war the Ukraine passed all its nuclear missiles to Russia, on the understanding that Russia protect the Ukraine from outside threats. So I’m pretty sure that we can discount the threat of nuclear war between the Ukraine and Russia.
