It was the time of the Awakening.

In that odd coincidental way that great ideas seem to occur in more than one place (e.g. the invention of bows and arrows, calculus, and bagpipes), there occurred in various parts of the world the idea that there were many fools out there, with money from which they ought to be parted.

The process continues, at some social cost.

I wouldn’t disagree with that. That was about the time that modernism ended and postmodernism started. Postmodernism makes no claims to being rational.

Some events relevant to that timescale.
Cosmological inflation was first proposed in January 1980.
First IBM PC in August 1981, first Microsoft operating system.
The first realistic supersymmetric version of the Standard Model was proposed in 1981.
The first superstring revolution occurred in the early 1980s.

Cosmological inflation exists, supersymmetry doesn’t exist.

Also coincided with the advent of neoconservativism as the dominant political ideology.

Postmodernism is based on the premise that no idea is too stupid to be put into action.
