We had scambled eggs for dinner last night, with parsley from the herb garden. I’ve grown and used my own herbs before, but this is kinda special, ‘cause its the first of what I hope will be a long run of home pickings. Would have been nice if the bum nuts were home grown too, but the chooks are still working on it. I’m waiting for that explosion of sound that is a chook going “OH MY GOD! LOOK WHAT I’VE DONE!”

What did you all pick first from your veggie gardens? Can you remember?

First growing veges for me was tomatoes when I was a kid. I loved growing them. And eating them. We moved house once and I was so annoyed because I had my usual lot of toms growing, I was major peeved and angry that no one thought about what I was doing in my garden patch , so I dug them up and put them into half kero tins and took them to the new place and re planted them ! They continued to grow too ! Mum laughed at me lol.
Well I wanted tomatoes and no bloody moving house was going to get in my way!

Current times, I’d have to say , apart from growing citrus for many years, the first picking was tomatoes LOL.

My first vegie garden was in the backyard of my grandmother’s old house – FT was 3 yrs old when we moved in. I made a teepee of garden stakes and plant peas around the bottom, wound string in a spiral up and around the stakes for the peas to cling to as they climbed. Can’t remember where from, but I got the idea out of a magazine or book. I’d started buying Earth Garden about then, so possibly that or Grass Roots. I also planted a row of bean seeds along the western side of the old car shed and rigged up strings for them to climb up, but the afternoon sun on the metal shed frazzled the seedlings. I started that garden bed by mulching with the lad’s old cotton nappies :) Prior to that, I’d only really played with flowers in the occasional rental garden.

So, peas were my first crop!

I remember one year as a teen ager….. my dad emptied out the “donkey” slang for a homemade hot water service made out of a 24 gallon drum.

There was months of ash from heating it up each day.

So my dad mixed ex amount behind the donkey and side fence and planted tomato plants.

My mum was so over run with marties in the house. I remember she made relishes, sauce, goodness knows what else.

Now if I was to achieve a 1/3 of that season bumper harvest…. I’d be happy as.
