Subject: Science Books and more

Just spent the day cleaning out dad’s house to get it ready for sale. He has room loads of science books, mainly ornithological and biology based, but many other science texts as well. And 35mm slides from field trips and fossil specimens. He also has quite a few art/art history books. I think it would be a shame to throw them all in a skip bin.

A Question: Where would be good places to contact to see if they want to look at/take what is there in the Perth region.

A Heads Up: If anyone here wants to have a look there will be a massive garage sale of everything in the house on Sat April 5th or you can contact me if you want to look earlier.

Maybe, I am not sure as I didn’t have time to catalogue them due to having to stop the kids from pulling everything out of the skip and bleating “but dad, I need this”… I will have a look next time I am up there.

You are more than welcome to come and take whatever you want Arts, as for the projector, I binned the only one I found today as it was beyond even my repair skills.

Really? There isn’t much to a projector.

Apart from the odd blown bulb there is only the fan motor and maybe an auto loading system.

Some books can be very very valuable. I would be inclined to stick them up for auction on eBay or Gumtree or such.

Any chance of posting titles here? I’m interested in any good science book. Even ornithology & biology. If I have a title I can try to look it up at the local university. I seldom buy new.

Yes, that is true, but honestly they have zero value to me if I have to dump them, so I am more than happy to give them away to someone that may have a use for them. That use maybe further study or maybe finding rare titles and making a mint, but either way someone else will be better off. I have sent an email to the naturalist society to see if they want a look. I know that they took many of my grandfathers books (after dad had taken his first pick) because my grandfather was well known n the ornithological field and had been published. So I guess they may want what they didn’t get first time around…

Not really, there are two rooms worth of books and I have no intention of cataloging them, I just want them gone, but not to the dump. If Arts has a look, she might be happy to catalogue them for you…

You could possible get Robert Muir’s too look through them to see if there is anything of worth that might be saleable.

Yeah, Stealth, you might be surprised what some of the older books in specialised collections are worth. I have a few books that, for various reasons, are worth thousands each. A member of the family has a collection from which a single row (of the bookshelf) could easily be worth more than the house that contains it. I strongly encourage you to invest the time to get proper valuations done.

I went through my books scanning the bar codes with my i-phone to generate a list of ISBNs. There are some sites which will process a file of ISBN’s into an online library. But it’s a tedious process, with bar codes obscured by stickers, books missing from the database, ISBN-10 vs ISBN-13, etc, etc, etc.
