My channel 7 and associated channels e.g. 7Two etc have suddenly decided not to work properly. We either get only audio with a black screen, or a static picture with audio, or a picture that “catches up” every minute or so, with audio.

It’s happened suddenly in the past week. No one else in the area seems to be having the problem. Mr Mutant re-tuned the TV over the weekend to no avail. Is it an antenna problem? All other channels work normally.

Probably. I have a similar problem with ABC.

it could be an antenna issue or it could be a TV hardware issue… but at the end of the day missing channel 7 isn’t that big of a loss…

My guess would be antenna.

It could also be an antenna cable problem. The selectivity of channels suggests that it’s not a TV hardware fault; the sudden onset suggests a reception problem, but the fact that it was working properly before suggests that either the antenna is old and corroded or has changed orientation. A cable problem is more likely. Have you got mice or rats or possums in the roof? If the antenna cable has been nibbled it could reduce the signal to the point that the TV can’t show anything.

Not currently but we occasionally do get rats.

So it’s a call to an antenna guy then?

If it were me, I’d have a look first, but I know what to look for. You or Mr Mutant may have the technical knowledge to fix it yourselves, but then you wouldn’t be asking here. Probably time to call the antenna guy.

We occasionally get something similar with Ch 9. It usually turns out to be their local retransmitter.

Either that or call the CEO of one of the channels that works, and try to persuade him to show MKR on their channel.

We lost a family of channels a couple of weeks ago. I can’t remember which one it was now. But we assumed it was something to do with the bushfire at Mt Clay. Mt Clay has an infestation of all sorts of towers on it. You could wipe out communications in the far South West of Victoria if you persuaded the fire to go up the mountain.

Which reminds me….I wonder if the fire has been put out yet. It hasn’t rained. So it’s probably just being held at bay.

Ah, looks like it’s now considered ‘safe’.

I think that was a controlled burn escapee.

And it would appear that there is a fire lookout halfway up one of the towers.

Go into tuning and check the signal strength and quality, for that channel. Compare with others.

You’d hope signal strength would be consistently maybe better than 60%, and quality probably near 100% (by memory), anyway compare it with the good channels. It’s in the manual tuning on my TV I think, alongside the autotuning. Go MENU on remote, then SETUP should get you in there.

Last time my TV signal gave me trouble it was one those old school belling-lee plugs, which might have thought to check more thoroughly before climbing on roof, spinning antenna, checking connections in and out masthead amplifier etc etc.

Pont being if one of your channels(7) tends to be bit lower power and something wrong with connections, cable, antenna or whatever might be enough to lower the signal enough to knock that channel around.

ABC channels are lowest power here this evening, 66% signal strength, 100% quality, we’re 70+km from transmitter, antenna is only 5 metres from the ground. Generally get good picture all the time except when get atmospheric whatever occasionally.

.

… it was one those old school belling-lee plugs,

actually it was the centre socket pin on the back of the TV had spread out from being pulled in and out every time we have lightning storms, caused me a moment of ‘idiot why didn’t you check that first’.

Sometimes turning it off at the powerpoint can help

turn off at powerpoint, wait for 20 seconds, turn on again

sometimes just turning it off by remote and on again clears problems

this happened last night with my dads digital tv box, the color went and it had some lines across the screen

I turned it off waited 20 sec and then on again

It fixed the problem

Oh, and it’s disappeared again. Black screen + audio. Might have a fiddle around with the cables, make sure the connections are good. All other channels are still good, it’s just the channel 7 group playing up.

Ring Today Tonight and break down and cry on camera, it’s worth more I think.

if it is only one station then i would think that it is that station that is doing some maintenance. i would imagine all the channels use the same tower, or one next to it.

not nessacelery, you may still have a slightly dodgy set-up, or there may be an obstacle between you and the transmitter. also how many people have you asked in your neighbourhood about problems.

i just see it as dubious that your system works on all other stations but not 7.

Seven BTQ6 177.500 Mhz 50.00 kW
SBS SBS7 184.500 Mhz 50.00 kW
Nine QTQ8 191.625 Mhz 50.00 kW
Ten TVQ11 219.500 Mhz 50.00 kW
ABC ABC12 226.500 Mhz 50.00 kW
31 Digital CTQ28 529.500 Mhz 15.00 kW

there isn’t a great spread of frequencies except for 31 channel which is UHF.

Um… only one. No one has mentioned anything on facebook about it- not my news feed nor the channel 7 fb page. Also no recent mentions on other social media or various forums.

For some years here it was the WIN network which gave trouble. Their transmitter was lower powered than the others & more prone to interference.
