ANU research: age of stars could unlock secrets of the universe

Discovering the age of stars using a new research technique may help build a much better understanding of the history of the universe, a Canberra scientist says.

An international team led by Australian National University astronomer Luca Casagrande has pioneered a research method that uses observations of stars’ brightness and sound waves that pulsate through them.

Dr Casagrande said sound waves pulsated through stars, causing them to regularly grow slightly bigger and cooler, a process that changed their brightness.

Other researchers had observed the pulsations to understand the physics of individual stars and identify the planets in front of them, he said.

Know what? are you trying to get me into trouble with mollwollfumble? Just kidding

It is a recent article, yes I’m checking the dates a bit more, I got a bit complacent when I was browsing all those climate change articles for the purposes of broadening the mind of a certain observer, which I got into trouble for with buffy, and I might post some more because I dont like censorship but next time they will all be in one post

this is a bit more on the article, I may have posted something on it, or someone else, but I cannot recall it.

We know stars pulse because we’ve observed our sun doing it (although I’m not sure if that particular pulsing is due to sound waves). It stands to reason that anything the stars do can give us a glimpse of the universe’s history- that’s pretty much how we’ve come to our current understanding.

pulsing can be due to the balance between the fusion reaction, causing the sun to expand, as it does this less pressure is on the core so the reaction lessens and gravity pulls the star inwards causing the reaction to increase. repeat.
