I’ve been away… Many happy returns BG!

hello folks. I had a fab-tab time down at Heronswood today. For a special birthday lunch we booked for their “Omnivores’ Winter Wild Feast”. The restaurant there put on a marvellous meal of wild game and home grown seasonal veges served with local bread and wine.

First we were taken on a tour of the Production Garden where veges for the kitchen are grown. After seeing where our food was coming from we were ready for our meal. On the table was: Carpaccio of wild venison fillet with beetroot essence, pine nuts and parmesan; Citrus cured Port Philllip Whiting; Cider braised wild rabbit with sherry soaked prunes, stinging nettle, tuscan kale and brioche; Slow cooked King Lake wild venison with gremolata and truffled wet polenta; Grapefruit infused five colour silverbeet; Heirloom beetroots with local olive oil; Spiced purple carrots; Forest mushrooms with thyme and balsamic; Rhubarb & tamarillo jelly tart, lemongrass and kaffir lime ice cream; Wines were Moorooduc Estate Pinot Gris and Shiraz fermented with wild yeast.

During the feast we heard from the Head of the Production Garden, a rep from the Winery, and the head chef who told us all about the food and wine we were eating. Not one item was bought from a stupidmarket.

After lunch Mr BG and I went for a wander through the gardens there and then I bought a Cherry and a Persimon tree, while Mr BG requested some seed from a giant mustard plant he sampled in the garden.

This is the second such feast they have had and they are planning to have them 4 times a year, one for each season. Mr BG wants to go to the next one, so I think I might oblige ;P

Wow what an impressive menu! I might twist Mr O40’s arm to attend the next one.

all the food was delicious. I especially liked the citrus cured whiting, the rabbit and the lemongrass and kaffir lime icecream :)
