True…
… with chooks and walled gardens.
over on the GA forum the most hits are in the ‘edible garden’ section – so i think they will keep it.

I hope they do or home in on Jerry’s garden.
Maggie Beer is now a regular in the magazine – doing a cooking segment.
we might get an hour long programme yet – community interest in home grown – organic is high.
Ah well. as Pepe said, the end of an era. It was a good show, nice comments from his colleagues. I found it quite moving when the staff a the RBG gave him 3 cheers. The section about his war buddies was well done too. I didn’t need the tissues but I do feel down about it.

rumour has it that Jane Edmundson will do the patch segments.
My sister Deb rang me as she knew I’d be upset. She wasn’t expecting me to be bawling my eyes out. Shoot going to start again:(
When I started my vegie garden adventure 9 years ago, I went out and bought Patch From Scratch” and watched it over and over to learn how to grow food for my family.
This started me on a journey that I am still not tired of traveling today.
So to see him move on and to still be able to hear all those good words from his mates……. well I just cried when the last bit was on and I knew next week he wasn’t going to be there.
Thanks for listening to the waffling of a deranged vegie growing freak….who is now off to find another tissue.

The thing is that Jane has been with show from almost the beginning, if not the beginning. There’s a pic of her and Pete and Colin and a couple of others from (I think) the first episode in the magazine. I guess its common practice to “promote” someone with longevity.
And Josh. Well, maybe I’m biased, having ‘sat’ through two of his lectures at uni, but he knows how to speak in public (unlike many of the others who are clearly NOT ‘presenters’). I like Josh. His lectures, which I listened to before I decided to garden again, were great. Really very interesting and informative. I might still have them saved on my laptop. Not sure of the copyright implications, but if you’re interested in listening to them, let me know. They were on water use. The whole unit was on water conservation. From memory Josh focussed on grey water and rain water in the residential garden environment. (Dubious memory because I wipe the slate clean at the end of each semester). Josh actually runs a water business.
Just checked the lecture notes Josh also covered irrigation options and plant selection & landscaping (impact on water use).
?? makes you wonder Sue , how many have a personal buss. interests in what is said ? I’m sure Josh is well informed etc…..as most who are who do these shows, comes dpwn the whether or not they have paid sponsor is the add. areas ?? I just know there is just SO much info out there via google without having to rush in and sit in front of the idiot box each week !!

To be fair, I’ve never heard any of the presenters even intimate what they do in their “spare” time. I only know about Josh’s business ‘cause its on his uni slides. All our guest lecturers have their business credentials on their lecture slides. And I actually don’t know exactly what Josh’s company does, except its something to do with water. Its his personal company “Josh Byrnes and Associates”, so if he being ‘sponsored’, he’s doing it himself.

would not be allowed to promote own or other business on ABC
it was a low key ending – no fireworks or farewell theme song.
actually i liked it. pete’s enthusiasm was greater than ever – so he leaves us with memories of his boundless energy and good health into old age.
and BTW pete – if i had 64 helpers my garden would be as good as the patch too – and would you lend us your makeup artist i want to look young again – sob.
on the question of sponsorship – sophie thompson runs her old man’s nursery. and she pushes neutrog ‘rapid raiser’ rather than yates ‘dynamic lifter’. so she too is less than impartial. lovely voice tho’,

LOl Peps, yes wouldn’t that be nice!!

While I make this lemon meringue pie, Pete’s helpers could do my garden….mind you I’d miss out on all the fun.
Show has come online. Yeah! Downloading it as I type. I once had to wait nearly two weeks! I think someone stuffed up! But, I did then get to watch two shows together.
has anyone tried the iview thing?
http://www.abc.net.au/iview
I think that’s what I watched the Grunem (sp) Transfer on yesterday. We’ve got a really generous download limit, so thought I’d have a peek. There werent’ any other shows that I was at all interested in. I download GA through I-Tunes as a vodcast. Its great, cause it saves it to my hard drive and I can scan them for old stories. Think I’ve shown the one about the mirrors to about 1/2 dozen people.
ABC has a bit of an advantage when it comes to the net. They’re less concerned about losing advertising revenue than the commercial stations. So, they can afford to put more of their shows online.
i reckon paytv is going the way of the dodo here in Oz. they got too much competition now, and nobody (apart from sports fanatics) wants to pay a monthly $30 (or so) bill regularly…whether they watch anything or not.

Yeh, I was thinking that too! Heck, if I could just have ME working full time in the garden, it would actually look like a garden! But that whole bunch of people all working full time on it… fantastic. I wonder if you can register a backyard as a work for the dole scheme? :D
Was very sad to see Pete go :( I noticed he said Jane would present “next week” – I wondered if maybe it’s ONLY next week and they might take turns after that? I guess we have to wait and see.
Hope they end up with someone in Tassie looking after the patch, won’t be the same otherwise.

He actually said that those 60 odd people helped produce the show. Not all of them would be worker bees in the garden. Researches, producers, camera crew, script writers, continuity. The vast majority would most likely to be production staff, rather than dirty hands.

true
even so – i’ll swap budgets and workforce with him anyday.
its a beautiful show garden but – like most professional jobs – they have no idea of what it means to REALLY budget.

Shhhhhhhhh.. don’t disillusion me!! I need some excuse to cradle in my heart as to why my garden is such a failure :)

Let me ask you Bon. If your garden was on TV every week – would it still be a failure? Of course not. The reason Pete’s garden is so wonderful is not because of all the staff, its simply because its on TV every week.
I can prove it to you. Josh’s garden isn’t on the show every week, and what happened? Pete visited and told he how bad it was (the beetroot anyway).
Its just the magic of TV that’s missing; and there’s probably nothing you can do about that. Some people try to get a little of that TV magic. They post photos on forums; they set up blogs read by a couple of dozen people. But TV is where the real magic is; the bigger the audience, the greater the magic.
;-)

vasilis garden was a tv show. he went to the ordinary gardens of real people and climbed between the rows of stakes and took a peek inside mosquito ridden water drums.
hey – wouldn’t it be great if vasili took over from pete?

ROFL – it would certainly change the tone of things :)
I don’t think the magic of TV would do much for my garden – it would still be overridden with weeds, the neighbour’s $&#(#%&( suckering plumbago, snails, slugs and caterpillars. Not to mention the sad sillouettes of all the poor plants that didn’t survive last summer.
pulls socks up However didn’t pop on here to have a self pitying whinge! At least my spring onions have sprouted, and should be safe thanks to the wonders of copper tape.

I could live without him coming to my garden LOL. Hate to think what he might find. Our south side constitutes both a personal and environmental hazard. I can see me facing a law suit ‘cause some big foot camera man broke his neck.
We have a strip from the front garden, the entire length of the house on the south side. The house is about 6ft from the fence, the neighbour’s house is about 8ft from the fence. I’m guessing it goes for entire weeks without any sunlight. Combine that with a) rain and b) the weird uneven concrete ‘steps’ the former owner installed – you have a recipe for disaster. The Man keeps saying “we should do something”, but I’m not sure what. I think its probably too dank even for a fernery. And then there’s all that blicking concrete to remove. And replace with some sort of terracing. Disaster area. Not even on my list of long term projects. Once I’ve got a productive vegie patch; fruit trees; frog pond and no gravel in the front garden I might consider. But then again, there’s also the back deck, and the rainforest floor to work on first ;-) I’m guessing in about 10 or 15 years I might get around to the south side.
i really enjoyed the watering systems by Josh on it so ill watch that part again.
i dont think it was very good today only 3 things on veggies.
