I didn’t watch the video (low bandwidth) but 50c seems a bit cheap considering that it can’t have paper lenses.

Apparently it does have paper lenses, or at least the lenses are incorporated in the paper sheets.

Sort of thing I should have designed, but I suspect it needs a special printer :)

Maybe it’s the projection, you don’t actually look into it you look at what it projects and that gives you the focus?

It’s not entirely clear from the presentation, but he mentions microlenses near the beginning and later he skims over it but I think they embedded in the paper and the difficulty was getting them thin enough. If you look at the paper where he is showing the design ideas, there are also LEDs in there.
