If anyone’s interested and on the east coast, there’ll be a total lunar eclipse tomorrow night, 15th April. The penumbra will first contact the moon at about 2:56PM (Melbourne time), the umbra will start crossing at about 4:00PM, and totality will start at about 5:08PM. Unfortunately, the moon won’t rise until about 5:50PM, but it will be fully eclipsed when it does. Totality will end at about 6:23PM, when the moon is almost 6o above the horizon. The umbra will finish crossing at about 7:32PM, and the eclipse will finish when the penumbra leaves the moon at about 8:37PM. All times are local Melbourne times.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Thanks Wocky.

————————————————————————————————-

Adelaide: The Moon rises at 5.48pm; total eclipse ends at 5.55pm; the eclipse ends at 7.03pm.

Brisbane: The Moon rises at 5.27pm; maximum eclipse is at 5.46pm; total eclipse ends at 6.25pm; the eclipse ends at 7.33pm.

Darwin: The Moon rises at 6.41pm; the eclipse ends at 7.33pm.

Hobart: The Moon rises at 5.33pm; maximum eclipse is at 5.46pm; total eclipse ends at 6.25pm; the eclipse ends at 7.33pm.

Melbourne: The Moon rises at 5.49pm; total eclipse ends at 6.25pm; the eclipse ends at 7.33pm.

Sydney: The Moon rises at 5.28pm; maximum eclipse is at 5.46pm; total eclipse ends at 6.25pm; the eclipse ends at 7.33pm.

Also: look east.

A high vantage point would be good. Looking out over the ocean would also be good. No clouds on the eastern horizon would be excellent.

Whist it has been cloudy during most of the day here in Brisbane (after a clear early morning), the cloud has now nearly cleared. So viewing might be good.

Whilst that is great for national or regional clouds, unfortunately it is not really suitable for appreciating clouds a locally. However, that said, looking up in the sky could work. And it helps the granddaughter anticipate the event.

It looks kinda weird for the Moon to be redder and dimmer than Mars.

FWIW, Jupiter’s also visible, about 90° away from the Moon & Mars, towards the south-west. It should be pretty easy to find, since it’s currently the brightest thing in the sky.

The Blood Moon Prophecy is an idea popularized by Christian pastors John Hagee and Mark Biltz that states the upcoming tetrad (a series of four consecutive total lunar eclipses, with six full moons in between, and no intervening partial lunar eclipses) which begins with the April 2014 lunar eclipse is a sign of significant things to come. Biltz believes that the Second Coming will coincide with the final eclipse of the tetrad, while Hagee only believes the eclipses are a sign of coming change in the course of history for Israel.

The Blood Moon Prophecy has quickly gained attention on the Internet after Biltz first proposed it in 2008, and has gained mainstream media attention as the April 15, 2014 lunar eclipse has approached. Despite the attention, few Christians believe the prophecy. It has been criticized by both mainstream Christian sources and secular astronomy blogs. Critics point out that tetrads that correspond with Jewish feasts are not as rare as Hagee and Biltz imply, that the eclipses will not be visible in Israel, and that the Bible also states it is impossible to know when the Second Coming will occur.

Well, that was fun. No clouds out to the east. We walked up to the top of the hill, saw the “red” moon and watched some of the partial eclipse. Little Miss Incorrigible V was thoroughly impressed, and very excited by it. She had the notion of an eclipse through watching movies, and loved seeing the real thing. We left the top of the hill when the partial eclipse was about half way through. She just saw the full moon through her bedroom window. She seems to understand that the eclipse was the Earth’s shadow.

All good.

All good.

:)

Excellent.

But it was a total eclipse, it’s just that the eclipse was already in progress before moonrise. I suppose the Kiwis could’ve seen the whole thing.

Sorry, my bad writing. We saw totality, and watched the eclipse from totality into the partial stage. (The “red” moon bit was supposed to indicate we saw totality.)

Yes, Mars was north of the moon and Saturn was south. So you might be thinking of Saturn.

Melbourne University astrophysicist Dr Katie Mack said Mars and Saturn would join the moon during its full lunar eclipse, making it a “cool” event.

“Mars is about as close as it ever comes to the Earth right now, it’s quite big,” Dr Mack said.

Dr Mack said Mars would rise first at about 5.30pm to the east, but slightly north of the eclipsed moon, which would rise at 5.49pm to the east. Saturn would rise about 7.15pm.

The two planets and the moon would be aligned at 8pm with Mars to the north, the moon to the east and Saturn to the south.
