Subject: Not a mandala... What's this called?

Hi everyone.

Imagine a funnel suspended above a surface by a single piece of string.

You fill the funnel with sand or paint or whatever, start the funnel swinging in some random direction and (possibly… I’m not sure if this is required) set the surface spinning. The sand drains slowly and steadily out of the bottom of the funnel.

The pattern that is formed by the sand on the surface… What is it called?

Is there a general form of equation which describes the pattern, and if so what is that equation?

The description I gave in the OP is not exactly what I’m looking for, but looking up lissajous figure gave me some good leads, so I’m off to read about cycloids and trocloids :)
