South Korea ferry disaster: Navy divers unable to gain access to capsized ship, Sewol

Maybe its time, ships and ferries were redesigned for easy access from the hull, bow, stern, port and starboard sides with dual hatches etc

for overturned access and underwater access

biggest problem is compromising the retention of any air pocket that might harbor survivors…..

how difficult would extendable outriggers for bad weather be to fit to a ferry?

that’s why I mentioned dual hatches, like on submarines, and spaceships

But I dont know what they are called

>>>how difficult would extendable outriggers for bad weather be to fit to a ferry?

very difficult I would think, but extendable outriggers could be designed for bad weather

something like those camera attachments that counteract movement, but for large waves in water

Im also thinking that automated systems could release oxygen when a ferry capsizes

you could design recessed pins into the hull for hook systems near airlock hatches on the hull

flexible tubes could be designed to be very flexible

but would require lots of testing

Why not design rotating decks on ferry boats, so if the boat does capsize, everything stays upright?

Seems like they need a better trained crew and better emergency procedures.

The survivors are saying they were all told to remain calm and stay in their seats. Many of those that survived disobeyed instructions and acted on their gut instinct that the ship was sinking.

I’ve not read the story

I would have thought that if the crew were organised that there would have been ample time to declare an emergency and get people onto the deck

people are trained from birth to believe that the authorities know what they are doing – when nothing can be further from the truth

populations are trained to take orders without question

No. It’s probably a distinctive north Asian cultural phenomenon. The “loss of face” associated with giving the order to abandon ship. They’d rather everybody died.

its exactly what I’m saying

if everyone is trained then when management is wrong they know that because everyone is trained to take orders theres a good likelihood everyone will follow those orders to the bottom of the ocean

taking orders without question is a hive mentality

when the queen bee is wrong she’ll lead the entire hive into destruction

it makes me wonder of hive mentality trumps free thought though

societies with the hive mentality do seem very good at surviving – sure they take big hits but the hive mentality might mean high birth rates too. a hive just gets bigger and bigger in societies with the hive mentality

Sparta became a hive mentality – after the earthquake the whole of Spartan society was transformed into the hive whose purpose was to enslave the native population so they could feed off them

athens went down that path to try and take on Sparta

its funny to note that “the republic” was the conclusion that the hive mentality was needed to keep a society strong. plato was living in the tail end of defeat. after seeing how Sparta was structured he concluded that the hive was the strongest most trusted form of survival – note how like Sparta citizens are brainwashed from birth and controlled by an elite – that in theory should have bene examined their entire life before being allowed to become the queen of the hive.

Seems to be a very big leap from ferry design to a compliant society to Spartans. You sure move fast.

The captain of the ferry has been arrested and charged with 5 offences, including negligence of duty.

The vice principle of a high school has committed suicide. A party of students from his school were on board the ferry as passengers, with more than 200 of them still missing.

No winners here.
