Funding CSIRO is vital if we want to future proof our world

The rumours circulating that CSIRO is resting on the chopping block should give all Australians pause.

Though many think these cuts affect a small elite working in the research sector, cuts to Australia’s core research capacity will eventually affect us all. CSIRO research directly improves Australia’s social, environmental and economic bottom lines, but at heart, it is our capacity for resilience that the research sector most strongly provides.

Cutting our capacity for research is like putting off going to the doctor to find out about that niggling pain until you’re a little more flush for cash. This seems to be a government only too happy to expose us to such risks in the blithe hope that the world around us will always be the same.

“Senator Carr believes climate change research will be “in the gun”.

“We know that the CSIRO is planning to get rid of their flagship in climate change,” he said.

A hiring freeze at the CSIRO could mean a quarter of staff are let go within a year
and it’s all because of the Federal Government’s anti-science bias,
Greens MP Adam Bandt says.

The CSIRO has told Fact Check its decision to put a freeze on hiring and contract
renewals was made “entirely by the CSIRO”. There was “certainly no directive from
the Government” for the CSIRO to implement the freeze, a spokesman said. It was
the result of its current budget position and revenue and expenditure forecasts, he said.

Fact Check asked Senator Abetz’s office whether the Government had anything to do
with the CSIRO jobs freeze, and whether jobs lost at the CSIRO would count towards
the Government’s goal to reduce the public service by 12,000 employees.
No response was received.

Fact Check also asked Mr Bandt for the basis for his claims, but his office did not respond.
Mr Bandt’s claim that the CSIRO jobs freeze is due to a “Government directive” is unsubstantiated.

We’ll need to make those cuts to the csiro so we can afford to give 137 million to a Japanese PR firm, or 5000 dollars to foreign investors ( all profit is private all debt is public)

Get used to it
