Hi I have free Avast and have had it for about 12 months , it is now asking me to register ? why id this necessary and is this the best free Antivirus these days —I did ask on the FFFS twice but nothing happens.

IME, avast always asks for registration. The program is still free.

To be honest, if you are running Win Vista and up, MS security essentials + malwarebytes is all you need. I don’t have any 3rd party av anymore. The MS stuff catches most/all.

I have used AVG free for years. I also have Malwarebytes & for housekeeping I use CCleaner.

I still use AVG. It rarely detects anything nasty, maybe once or twice a year, but that could nonetheless be saving me a lot of bother.

This makes a nice pair with the Free Energy thread.
