Subject: I Think I Might Grow Some Beetroot

It’s a winter vegetable here. Dad used to grow it and Mum ruined it by preserving with too much vinegar. However the weight reduction fraternity just loves it, so might as well grow my own…

Any tips? Dad had raised garden beds, about … oh, eight inches high…he swore by soluble Thrive (once he found out about it)…

pretty easy to grow. A pinch of borax in the waterwhen you sow/plant will offset any boron deficiency. Only need to apply it once and you don’t need much.

I’ve been growing cylindrical and globe beetroot the last few years. The cylindrical ones are great for slicing. I just boil them and eat them either hot or cold as a vegetable. Sometimes I splash a bit of vinegar on them, but really we like the earthy beetroot taste on its own.

Don’t let them get too big and woody.

I have taken out a couple of carpentry books (or have I told you?) and am getting ready to start creating some beds. They will need covers of course, bird proof ones for the time being…this is getting eggsiting…
