Subject: Tech Talk: "Waterstains" on aging plasma TV

Hi,

I have a Panasonic Vierra plasma tv, around 6 years old.

Over the last year or so it has developed a spreading problem with its pixels.
It looks a little like a dried water stain on paper. It is only really visible when the screen is white, and presents itself as a washed out grayish colour rather than the purer white of the good pixels.

The stain currently covers about 20% of the screen in 4 largish interconnected blotches and maybe 40 or 50 very small unconnected blotches.

Does anyone here know what is happening to my TV and how bad it will ultimately become?

I had waterstain damage on my digital camera screen. I put it in a bag of rice for three days and it fixed it.

If it’s been spreading for the past year or so, it sounds like it will continue spreading until the whole screen is affected.

Heh.

Just to be clear, it only looks like a water stain…

The “stain” is underneath the outer plastic cover of the screen. It’s very definitely the pixels themselves that are not putting out the right light or something. It’s not on the outside, or even the inside (like condensation) of the screens outermost plastic cover.

Actually, scratch all that. I just checked to make sure what I said above is true and it actually looks like the staining is on the inside face of the outermost cover… So something is getting in to that surface. The stains don’t vary in shape though, other than slowly getting bigger, so it doesn’t look like I’ve got condensation forming (ie it does not act as I would expect of condensation).

Yeah, I think so to.

Like I said though, it’s only noticeable when the screen is white. A normal, multi coloured screen, I can’t see it at all. So as well as the spreading, I’m wondering if it is likely to become worse (eg more visible in all colours) in the near future.
