3rd rock from the sun?
name of solar system?
and our solar system is in a galaxy?
and that galaxy is in what?
like that :)
dose our sun have a name ?

Earth’s Solar System,
Earth’s Galaxy,
Earth’s Universe.
It is all a bit Earth-centric.
Often in science fiction they name planets from their position from the host star…
Our star is called the sun…
This would make earth “Sun 3” though some people refer to it as “Sol 3” to sound clever.
Perhaps you should look at how they name exoplanets?
there suns have names ?

are we part of a galexy ?
“an exoplanet’s name is normally formed by taking the name of its parent star and adding a lowercase letter. The first planet discovered in a system is given the designation “b” and later planets are given subsequent letters. If several planets in the same system are discovered at the same time, the closest one to the star gets the next letter, followed by the other planets in order of orbital size.”

yes, the Milky Way Galaxy
I’m surprised Rev hasn’t posted this one yet
Earth
3rd Planet from Sun – star catalog number 1 (guess)
Milky Way Galaxy.
From the start catalog entry you’d find out where it was.

OK, but “Solar System”, “Observable Universe”, and “Universe” should be identified.
I looked it up but didn’t think it sufficiently located the earth’s position…
yes, the Milky Way Galaxy
so if you wonted to tell so one were in that galaxy we were living ? any thing?
think these astronomy people need to lift there game :)
thank you Rev
According to the exoplanet naming convention, they don’t use the number from the host star as another closer one may be found. So they go in order of discovery so rather than three, for us, earth would be 1…

You have to wonder.
What were the 171 people thinking when they “disliked” that?
Probably religious types…

They were probably thinking that Monty Python were a bit silly and at times not very amusing…

sure, but we have called ours “Solar System”, “Observable Universe” and “Universe”
There are other “Star Systems” and ours is called the “Solar System”

Sol is the name of our star; other star systems have different names.

Any sun with planets orbiting it is a solar system.
Ah, yeah. No…

No, it’s just another name for star/sun.
There are billions of others out there.

That is not the convention used by astronomers.

Perhaps we could get away with calling the Sol System (with capitals) when talking about our system specifically, and solar system (lower case) when talking generically.

Easier to use the term ‘star system’.
Sol :)

A “star system” seems like a good name for a system of stars.
Yes, the giver of all knowledge (or thereabouts) calls it a “Planetary System”…

Or a system that is based on A star.

I think the OP is an interesting question.
Is there a universal co-ordinate system that if you had a starship and typed in x,y,z co-ordinates you would get where you wanted ?
What is the origin of this system ?

Bill and ted
Relativity would kind of mess up such a system
There is only need to specify The Earth (unless it rains and then it’s The Mud)

So, does the universe have a co ordinate system, like latitude and longitude on Earth ?

Here is one for the galaxy

Spelling correctly is also required to get a letter to the correct address

Way back on the forum I came up with a more detailed address than that, pity I don’t know the link. Something like this.
Earth
Solar System
Local fluff
Local bubble
Gould Belt
Orion Arm
Milky Way Galaxy
Virgo cluster
Virgo-Fornax cluster
… (a sequence of ever-larger superclusters, based on 2MASS data, perhaps something like Ophiuchas cluster, Hercules supercluster, Shapley Concentration, it was more accurate in my earlier post)
Observable Universe
Universe

Is that the original version or the corrected version? The corrected version, by the same author, fixed up errors in the original (eg. in the original for one line “billion” was accidentally stated as “million”). For a long time I had the words of the original Galaxy song posted on my office wall, with corrections.
Wikipedia gives this for Earth’s address:
Earth → Solar System → Local Interstellar Cloud → Local Bubble → Gould Belt → Orion Arm → Milky Way → Milky Way subgroup → Local Group → Virgo Supercluster → Pisces–Cetus Supercluster Complex → Observable universe → Universe
“Local Interstellar Cloud” is the same as “Local Fluff”.
Voyager’s Golden Record has an address to find Earth

I didn’t notice, it looked pretty original, I didn’t know the original got it wrong.
ps I still say we need to specify which observable universe and which universe we are talking about.
It seems to not be made clear, but our star/sun’s name is Sol. Hence the stellar system that is centred around Sol is called the Solar system. I have never heard ‘star system’ used before this thread, it is ‘stellar system’ to describe a star and orbiting objects.

“Sol” is the Latin name for “Sun”, and the terms “sun” and “solar system” are widely used for stars and systems of one or more stars and planets other than our own, including by NASA.
So to avoid any possibility of misdirection of mail it makes sense to refer to Earth’s Solar System, rather than just The Solar System.
you’ll be needing a postcode for one particular spiral arm of the milky way in there somewhere.
the difference when talking about our particular sun, moon, solar system etc is that they are capitalised. or should be.
also the name of our sun is not Sol, our moon is not Selene and our planet is not Terra. of course there is nothing to stop you referring to them as such.
ChrispenEvan said:

Actually the names for the Sun and the Moon should be Hyperion, and Phoebe respectively, but the astronomers have messed things up by calling a moon of Jupiter Phoebe.
However, to bring this important topic to a close, I will concede that the International Astronomical Union has declared The Sun, The Moon and The Earth to be the one approved and correct name for these bodies.
But good luck to them getting that accepted by the Intergalactic Postal Union.

I looked to a good song, rather than a good book.
Surveying the available Greek Gods, I suppose Pluto is the most appropriate for the Earth, but since that name has already been allocated to a not-a-planet, I suggest Demeter:
“Goddess of grain, agriculture and the harvest, growth and nourishment”
I’m sure transition will approve.
>“Goddess of grain, agriculture and the harvest, growth and nourishment”
I’m sure transition will approve.
+ thumbs up, that’ll do fine.
