Subject: Bibbulmum track trek - epic pud

I am interested in doing this trek..

“Walking the Bibbulmun Track is just as awe-inspiring as walking in the Everest region in Nepal and seeing the biggest mountains in the world. The giant red tingle trees, the Southern Ocean, the wonderful beaches, the grass trees all bearing their flower spikes after a devastating fire – it is all so different to anywhere else we have been. It is the variation in the terrain and the sheer majesty of it all that makes it so very special.”

the information says that the 1,003.1 kilometres can take between six to eight weeks. I’d love to do this, but can understand that not everyone can devote this much time. however if anyone is seriously interested in joining me, something can be organised for shorter treks or a couple of weeks.

There is ample information available to become an ‘end to ender’ including workshops (which I am more than willing to do and act as guide) as well as townships along the way to provide ‘comforts’ and food and some forumers in the sw wa might be able to help out with food drops etc.

the website of interest is http://www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au/

and the full route is here

I feel the best time to do this is any time between April and early November. It does vary a little and depend on the current conditions. October and November can be hot, cold and all points in between. Overnight temperatures in late winter and early spring can get down to as low as minus 10 in some areas in the northern half. The rain usually starts in May (earlier in the south) and the wettest months are July and August. In the northern half we tend to get heavy rain then it stops, although there can be lots of drizzle along the south coast.

however It is not possible to walk consecutive sections of the Track as day walks or to do it staying in accommodation each night. Some sections have many days between permitted access points (up to four days) and long distances between towns (the longest being 12 days).

so… who’s with me?

The Foundation also runs two 8-day tours which are based on day walks and include all accommodation, transport and meals.

some parts of the track are kid friendly and they can be brought down to meeting points as well.

Seriously, I’d consider doing one section of the track and from my memory of visiting the area in 2006, think it would probably be Northcliffe to Walpole or maybe further towards Albany.

I suspect it might be just you doing this , I find Australia a bit bland to walk around, then you’ve got the heat and flies/ Mosquitos .

You’d camp I’d suppose , take enough water. You’d need to travel by night to evade the black helicopters and go all ghost protocol on their arse.

I’ve done Pembrokeshire

There’s a coastal path there . Very up and down , in and out . You walk for miles but only cover a small section of the path.

It’s dotted with tiny inlets / secret beaches. The IRA were using Pembrokeshire at one point . The police swore an entire town to secrecy as they waited for them to turn up and ship weapons into the inlets around druidstone.

A few years earlier a couple walking the path had been mysteriously shot dead , one theory was the IRA shot them because they found them using the area, it’s probably why the police became suspicious .

The area was notorious in the past for smuggling alcohol ( not budgies). Nod place is called brandy bay

SL, poik.. September next year? 2015… I would concede a two or three week trek. You can actually still be considered an ‘end to ender’ even if you break the journey up in time slots

or we could walk really fast ;)

I’m still a possibility, though coming from Sydney this could get complicated. At this stage, I’m thinking that it would need to tie in with our family trip up to the Kimberleys. In September, we would probably be on our way back, so they could drop me off at the appropriate place, drive back to Perth, put the car on a train home and fly back themselves.

The longest I have ever walked is 6 days. I don’t think I could do any more than this now, so if I do make it there, it really would be for just one of the sections of the track.
