Rik Mayall, star of The Young Ones, dies aged 56

British comedian and actor Rik Mayall has died aged 56, according to his management team.

He played the obnoxious, poetry-writing anarchist Rick in The Young Ones alongside his friend Adrian Edmondson before the duo later went on to star in their sitcom Bottom.

Mayall also appeared in shows including Blackadder and The New Statesman.

He died at home in London. The Metropolitan Police said the death was not believed to be suspicious.

Just seen this on the ABC News site. Bugger. The young one’s was a particular enjoyable part about growing up.

We had a record of Cliff Richard and the Young Ones. I found the B side delightfully naughty, but I don’t remember what it was.

A “sudden death” but “not suspicious”… suicide?

To be brutally Frank I didn’t find him very funny.

He had an accident on fourbikes in 1998 that left him in a coma and there was talk of turning off his life support at one stage, apparently.
He came good but never back to his old self, again apparently.
Anyway I wish him luck in his next phase.

Well, if I was to choose one person from The Young Ones who I didn’t mind dying young, he would be the one. Same age as me.

His wife said it could have been an epileptic fit or his heart gave out. He’d been in poor health for years since the accident. I think he was brilliant, but he was best in Bottom. It’s a pity he and Edmondson couldn’t have reprised that in middle age – it would have been even more sordidly amusing if Richie & Eddie were still living together in mutual squalor and frustration after all those years :)

There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard.

He used to appear in Saturday night live with vivian in various sketches – the dangerous brothers ??

There was the young ones but was also in “ the comic strip” series – he was gun fighting outside “ the hotel bastardo” in one scene.

Rick mayall’s main audience was teenage boys and he later developed his comedy to follow them through their adulthood.

Yep. We enjoyed that one too.

What I loved about “The Young Ones” in particular was that the four main characters were over-the-top stereotypes of students from four different decades, sharing the same house. Brilliant concept.
