Nearly got skittled by one of these things today, whizzed past me from behind on a footpath without any warning, and almost completely silent, do the users of these machines have to have compulsory third party insurance? is there any speed limit on them whilst being used on foot paths shared by pedestrians?

Dunno, but I overtook an old lady on one “driving” in the breakdown lane of a busy arterial road out of Sydney. Figured she may not have had much to lose if it didn’t go so well. Was funny though when we stopped in long-weekend traffic and she undertook the lot of us and was outta there.

So then they are forced to be Collingwood supporters?

I think they are supposed to travel at walking pace on the footpath.

I initially read the word “skittled” as “skilled”. They’re only silent to deaf people, all the rest of us can hear them coming easily.

There’s a maximum legal speed of 10 km/h. That’s not fast.

Liability insurance for mobility scooters costs about $120 a year. Also, sometimes it’s covered in other types of insurance such as home and contents. It’s not compulsory.

Especially if it is Sergey Morozov. He can walk at 15.8km/h…

The biggest worry is feral old fart geeks with too much time on their hands who overclock their buggies.

Damn straight. He can walk a half marathon faster than I can run one, he must be cheating…

…or I am just cr*p at running

Speaking of which – There’s debate going on in the cycling community about whether petrol-powered (by which they mean motor-assisted) bikes are bicycles or motorbikes. Apparently the rules say the engine can be up to 48cc or 200W.

A modern 2-stroke petrol engine of 48cc will produce about 15 times that power.

250w (or 200w in some states) even if that is produced by an ICE. Most states also have a engine cut out limit of 25km/h.

Hmmm. Seems like a real easy thing to tamper with.

A while ago I was looking at ICE scooters. Some nice stuff in America and Europe but only Chinese knock offs in Oz.

Last week I saw an old man on a buggy with the plastic cover down. He was inside, it was sunny outside, so I assume the plastic protects him from blood spatter when he hits someone :)

The max speed and the max power is not the problem. It is the idiots in control of the bike that cause problems, and this does extend to those unmotorised cyclists that do 45km/h, two abreast on dual use pathways…
