it is a big effort for these little chicks and it can sometimes take a whole day for them to hatch out. Don’t be tempted to help them though as it means they are not quite ready yet. They will have little sleeps between efforts too.

the egg yolk keeps them going for another 24 hours but they will peck at some chick starter crumbles so it is good to have that ready with some water in a shallow dish or something so that they don’t drown in it. I assume you have some crumbles already?

Well all finished and the sand has been spread around the chook run, freedom Road and some in the duck run and some saved for when the fruit trees are planted out.

No to down load the photos and see what is good for my blog.

Putting this in here where I can find it…I checked all my chooks for earlobe colour and they are all red lobed…the oldest, Ringo, has paler lobes and comb ,because it’s old and not laying, but nonetheless still red. The white egg is laid about once a week only.
The mystery deepens.

are you really sure Ringo is not laying? At one a week…

I expect it is only a rule of thumb and is breed related so one of yours maybe a cross.

from a CSIRO site

The intensity of the brown colour of eggs from reciprocal crosses between Australorp and Rhode Island Red chickens decreased with age of the bird in a non-linear manner.

Thats possible BG , Ringo was a high school hatchling so could be any cross breeding in her. But she laid brown eggs for near on 3 years. Maybe shes gone , as Lucky put it, whacko jacko lol.

Arrh ok..well it’s either that or another chook is flying in to use the nest box!

what it means is the older the chook gets the paler the egg gets (but not consistently.) So it could be that the one laying the white egg is an older chook.

I kinda recall that the brown colouring is a coating of blood cells layed down after the formation of the shell, but I can’t find a reference to it on the web. I think I read it in an old poultry book. Some breeds are more prone to this than others.

Sometimes no matter how hard you try things just don’t work out – there’s nothing more you can do. Unfortunately you never really can have the pleasure of having pets or raising animals without having the pain of losing them too – but in the end the good times are usually worth the bad times.

It will pass eventually – how long is an individual thing. I was crying on and off for months after I lost my last ratties. But eventually it does pass and you are ready to try again and love some new little creature.

So sorry, Veg.

I am sad too, I accidentally smothered 2 of my ducklings the other morning – Sooty and Blondie – the only 2 I had named as it happens. I had them in a sleeve of my jacket (not wearing it), lying down with them and dozed off. Apparently 2 worked their way away from the air – really upset at myself and lucky I didn’t kill them all. So careless of me:( I should have realised that polar fleece fabric doesn’t breathe well…

It’s been an accident-prone week – have now broken a plate and 3 coffee- cups with my arthritic hands and clumsiness – as well which is nothing compared to the unnecessary loss of little lives. I planted trees over them – one is under a banksia and the other under a wattle…I am crying too telling you about it.
