Subject: Probiotics & Yohgurt

Just reading the packaging on my yohgurt tub it says:

25 million probiotics in every teaspoon.

How can one be so sure of the accuracy of this claim?
How do they calculate/estimate this figure?

Apparently adult humans carry around 3-4kg of of bacterial gut flora!

Grow a bunch of bugs. Use a small amount eg 1 mL to grow cultures in a way you can count eg spread it on a petri dish. You then count the number of colonies that grow. Each one is presumed to have grown from a single bug, so if you get 100 spots on your dish you had 100 bugs or “colony-forming units” (CFU) per mL of initial culture. Then you do some maths.

Hmm, so would a yougurt manufacturer source these probiotic mircoorganisms from a lab and add it to the youhgurt or do the microorganisms grow naturally in the youhgurt and they have a scientist on staff to check the product quality?

How robust are these microorganisms?
I’ve noticed that chemists keep the acidophilus biphidus capsules in a fridge.

Lactobacilli often live in humans, so the fridge bit is just to slow them down so they make it to your gut alive. They’re also what’s used to make yoghurt in general – they turn lactose into lactic acid. The special bit WRT probiotics is that they’re alive when you eat them.

Yes, I imagine the bacteria would only be beneficial while alive as they transition from the food to your gut and work their organic magic.

The human body is really quite a complex organism, when you think about it.

Do not argue the point. I wish to entertain myself by annoying vegetarians, and therefore I shall.

They are herbs (non-woody plant). Vegetable is not a botanical term.

some yoghurt has up around 30% sugar, which hardly qualifies as yoghurt, so it’d probably help breed bad bacteria.

wife and I went off high sugar yoghurt a while back, wont buy the shit, instead we do a small amount of low sugar yoghurt and she eats rolled oats instead, which seems to work.
