My instructions on the probiotics say no cola for 30 mins before or after I take the capsule. I’m guessing it’s due to the acidity so would the same instructions apply for all soft drinks? I have asked the nurse but she’s playing pass-the-question-to-someone-else.

Considering the stomach acids pH is similar to Coke etc, I can’t see how it would be related to acidity.

Don’t really know DA.

It might be that cola is more acidic than other soft drinks. Probably best to avoid them all. But this site says:

…probiotic bacterial survival was best when provided within 30 minutes before or simultaneously with a meal or beverage that contained some fat content.

Received a reply from the head researcher: cola is particularly bad (no reason given) but recommends no soft drinks for 30 mins either side of taking the tablet.

Now email back and ask for the reason. I want to know. Is it the fizz?

From memory it’s the acidity.

Cola apparently has phosphoric acid and the others have citric acid.

I read this a few days ago online somewhere when the question first came up.

The figures that were quoted in the article I read were gastric acid 2 to 3 pH, cola 2.8, other soft drinks with citric acid higher at 3+.
