80 Percent of All Light in the Universe is Missing

Washington, 12 Jul (Prensa Latina) According to observations made by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope, the Universe is missing 80 percent of all its light.
Astronomers are completely baffled: “We still don’t know for sure what it is, but at least one thing we thought we knew about the present day universe isn’t true.”

Those are the strong words of the co-author of the paper published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters by Ohio State University’s David Weinberg.

Maybe the dark matter absorbed it.

It’s a bit like the old term “missing mass” – the problem wasn’t really that the mass is missing, but that it’s there. Same with this “missing light” – it’s apparently there, but we don’t know where it comes from.

As this missing stuff is in the nearby universe, not the far away universe, I’d be inclined to put my money on either supernovas or other transient events such as helium flash.
