Has anyone got a photo of strawberries growing in a gutter hanging on a frame or a fence please? I want to grow them this way this year and the picture in my mind seems to be a different one to the one in Mr O40’s mind! This often happens I must admit :)

It’s not exactly a backyard fence but does anything on this page help?

i don’t have a computerised water recycling process yet – but those intense glasshouses with stacks of toms and strawbs certainly look tempting.

It kind of gets away from the backyard garden a bit though Peps, it’s a commercial setup. They wouldn’t get the flavour that we do ! LOL

He sees wooden shelves with guttering sitting on it. i think it’s overkill. Just guttering would do.

i see – its a structural debate.
gutters have to be supported at one metre centres and have a minimum fall of 1:100
tell him – go the blokes ! – (or the babes – sorry i’m not much help)

My dad in law grows strawberries in pvc piping. Uses fairly big stuff, drills fairly big holes every so often along the length (guess small fist size); puts end caps on it. Not sure if he fills it from the ends or through the holes, maybe a combination of both. He has that hanging on brackets on the wall of the house. Not sure how close his brackets are, maybe 1metre centres,

if i ever find my mirrors, i’ll have to reconsider where i’m going to hang my strawberries, cause i had them planned for the same wall. Although if I could work it so the brackets that held the strawberry pipes also held the mirrors in place i might be on a winner. The strawbs would help disguise the mirrors. Might get a bit warm for them though.

OK. making progress with the strawberry dilemma.
Can’t get any 2nd hand guttering, the demolition men don’t go up on roofs any more (OHS) LOL
Can’t get 2nd hand PVC piping.
We have several sheets of metal roofing doing nothing, so the plan C is that MrO40 will put shelving up made of this on angle brackets fixed to my shed wall. (This will be above the black bins in the wood yard.) I have already got several trough shaped pots which will be perfect for the plants. He will fix a baton above the shelving to hang birdnetting and shade cloth from.
All I’ll have to buy are the angle brackets :) Cool.

One of my strawberry plants has got brown edges on the leaves. Almost a tea stain look. The other two are fine. Any ideas?

i don’t worry about a few blemishes too much – as long as new leaves are sprouting.

Here’s a shot of my strawberry shelves, the top one is empty waiting for some new plants which I’ll buy soon.
Also a not-very-good pic of a little brown Thornbill, they were having fun when the rain stopped and landed in the Mulberry tree next to where I was standing. By the time I got the camera lined up there was only 1 left! They’re really cute in a brown sort of way :)

I have to go and fix up some bird netting over the strawberries now. The Blackbirds can smell worms and are digging in the pots. B***** Birds.

luv the strawberry shelves – tell hubby there’s a job for him here.
and its a brilliant productive use of a wasted corner of the shed – spuds and strawbs – yummo.
