As a kid I often heard my mother talking to other married women about the food cravings some of them had during pregnancy, of which coal was one strange one. Haven’t heard if women still have there unusual desires, or have better diets reduced the occurrence?

>BabyCenter moms confessed to wanting pickles wrapped in cheese, salsa spooned straight out of the jar, and yes, even steak fat. And where in the spectrum of sweet, salty, spicy, and sour does one woman’s passion for black olives on Sara Lee cheesecake lie?

I quite often get those kind of cravings, but have never to my knowledge been UTD.

I’d imagine all kinds of factors could influence food cravings and aversions. When my dad was dying of cancer he couldn’t stand anything sweet, but was particularly drawn to smoked foods, especially smoked mackerel.

Yes, but it was only wives of coal miners that had the craving for coal;

the carbon tax sorted those misfits out, propper!

WHAT A MOUTH (WHAT A NORTH AND SOUTH)
(Harry Champion / Arr: R. P. Weston))

Tommy Steele – 1960

Jimmy Bean was a funny lookin’ fellah
If he had another mouth, he’d look much sweller
But the “race” queered him from winning a beauty show
It was like a steamboat funnel
Or a railway arch, or the Blackwall Tunnel
When you can’t see Jim, when he opens his mouth you’ll know

And as poor Jim goes walkin’ about
You can hear the kids all ‘ollerin’ out

(What?)
SPOKEN: What? Ooh, um….

“What a mouth! What a mouth! What a North and South!
“Blimey, what a mouth he’s got”!
Now when he was a baby, well, oh Gawd luv ‘er!
His poor old muvver used to feed him with a shovel
What a gap! Poor chap! He’s never been known to laugh (Oy!)
If he did, it’s a penny to a quid
That his face would fall in half!

Mouth so large, oh Lord! oh Lumme!
He can whisper in his own ear, ain’t it funny?
And to quench his thirst, now he’s gotta take a drink o’ mine
He got so drunk one foggy morn
He layed in the road and started to yawn
And a poor old man was delivering coals close by

And as he went to shoot the load
He saw Jim’s mouth out in the road

(What?)
SPOKEN: Eh? Ooh, what? Oh, yes….

What a mouth! What a mouth! What a North and South!
Blimey what a mouth he’s got
Now the poor old man, bein’ a short sighted fellah
When he saw Jim’s mouth, he took it for the cellar
And he shot the lot, right into his mouth, no joke! (Oy!)
Jim, poor soul’s got a tummy full of coal
And he corfs up lumps o’ coke! (Oy!)

(What?)
SPOKEN: Eh? What, eeh, ooh, ooh, cor blimey, I thought it was all
over. Oh. yes, um….

Seems to be as strong as ever, but probably more food stuff to choose from.

>>If you’re pregnant and find yourself plagued by food cravings, you’re not alone. A South African study showed that up to 84% of pregnant women experience some form of food craving. So what drives a pregnant woman to crave? There are theories that cravings represent dietary deficiencies, and a craving is the body’s way of sourcing the nutrients it needs. But, it seems, few experts agree.<<

My wife’s first pregnancy resulted in a craving for prawns, so much so that she ate a half kilo in a session. After that she couldn’t stand the sight of the fish. We had to put a towel over our fishtank.

Wow that’s unusual. Did she have any other odd aversions during other pregnancies?

:) Sounds like all was normal then. I have never seethed at Mr S as I did in those first few weeks of my first pregnancy, before I even knew I was pregnant.

The only common craving that I recall hearing about on pregnancy forums was that of Frosty Fruit ice blocks. Everyone seemed to have a freezer full of them, including me. Not sure whether I sought these myself before becoming aware of others’ cravings though.

My other half craved calcium and naturally chose calcium rich foods across the available spectra. Ate them to excess and was also prescribed calcium supplements by her doctor. I took umbrage at that and tossed the supplements on the compost heap. Not that I was doubting the doctor but more what she was telling the doctor. In the end during a three day birthing process, I discovered the sisters med book open on the page discussing the excess of calcium intake interfering with the closing of the skull portions to facilitate birthing.

I do recall discussing calcium intake with my Ob. and asking her whether I needed supplements. She mentioned something about risk of kidney(?) stones and told me not to take any.

I haven’t had any cravings per se but I have decided that certain foods go really well together, like apple +corn +sour cream and salted strawberries with grilled cheese. I haven’t had any cravings where I really need (certain food) right NOW although I do have a preference for red fruits like strawbs and watermelon.

I had an aversion to dairy (except cheese and sour cream) but that has eased now. Good, because I couldn’t even stomach calcium tablets :( Still have an aversion to rockmelon though.
