HIV rates at 20-year high, with unprotected sex between casual male partners seen as leading cause
The number of people diagnosed with HIV in Australia remains at 20-year highs.
Annual data released from the Kirby Institute shows 1,235 new cases were diagnosed last year.
The figures have been released ahead of a global AIDS conference in Melbourne next week.

Bryce Courtenay, in April fool’s day, also says casual gay sex is a major cause of HIV spreading but back 30 years ago, it was between men who normally identified as heterosexual with occasional homosexual dalliances. I wonder if the same applies now.

I wonder if any of the pundits on this are game enough to put forward the proposition that the rise could be the result of AIDS victims living much longer and thus able to infect a lot more people.

Unlikely.
If you’re living longer with AIDS, you’d presumably be on HAART or similar and would know of the diagnosis.

Doesn’t necessarily mean they are not infecting others.

They were discussing this on the radio with the person involved in collecting the stats, they said young homosexual men were less concerned with catching HIV and were having more unprotected sex.

If they’re young they haven’t been living with AIDS very long…

One in seven don’t know they have the virus. That’s sufficient to spread a lot of cases around if people are having unsafe sex.

…that’s one in seven people who have HIV, not one in seven Australians or one in seven gays :)

I talk to people about post-exposure prophylaxis almost every day and none of them have any idea what I’m talking about.
And, for many of them, their risk profile is such that they should.
One could be forgiven for concluding that some of our health authorities are asleep at the wheel.

Yes. By which I mean no.
Indulge me for a moment, if you would, and ponder the absurdity of the situation of a particularly bad example – Victorian government prison guards who, despite being the people most at risk of exposure to blood-born pathogens, have no idea of the existence of policies and procedures that their own employer has in place to protect them post-exposure.
By way of evidence, I present this for example.
The people I’m talking about are not just some newby idiots – They’re experienced professional officers, from a variety of ranks.
Boggles the imagination, doesn’t it?
