I think I have these…they are very hardy and make a lovely splash of colour…of course they are all in pots (yellow ones!)…When they get outsize, I ruthlessly break them back to size and compost the trimmings…
…and these are all growing wild…amazing…I like the purple double trumpet type flower…
A weird purple double…
————————-
Datura shape flower but a bit more exotic I think.
A yellow Flower

Do you know the name of this one PM? I have just bought a plant that is very much like this and I am having trouble with ID. It would be an uncanny fluke if you happen to have photographed the exact same plant but they are certainly similar.
Mine has leaves very much like the one in your photo and the flowers on mine (I have only had one open) are yellow and about the size of a 20c piece. I suppose I’m grasping at straws but there is hope.
The name I got when I bought it was something like “Minnium” I thought but there is nothing similar in my search so far.
A Purple Flower

Now that on’s nice. Good photo too.

is this one a purple ground cover? i might have it.
As usual…stunning photos from PM’s camera:D
These flowers were not wild, they were found in a few gardens in Arawa, including the Women’s Training Centre (like a CWA) and the best guesthouse in town to stay in. The linen is crisp and clean, the AC works in the rooms that have ‘em, the power is on only at certain times (thanks to the Genset) and the dining room is sweet, full of locally crafted quilted stitched fabrics and the meals are massive.
And they are happy to supply you with some ice if you happen to bring a beer or two home with you to chill out with as you watch the sunset behind Panguna. The ladies there are wonderfully warm and inviting and really make you feel at home. And there is a television in the tv room.
The other flowers were taken at a little compound area (not compound like Moresby with razor wire and guard dogs) of a collection of houses where the Bishops, Fathers and Sisters of the Catholic Church are set up. They have an active Catholic Youth Program in place with volunteers from as far as Germany all trying to help establish productive learning programs for the young people of the community. After the crisis, there is what looks like a lost generation of youths all without drive or ambition. Those who have enough smarts and money to complete their education will inevitably leave town as their are no real prospects for someone to create a career. Those that are left behind, are exactly that, left behind…
But they grow some gorgeous flowers in town :)
Your photos are, as always, marvellous, PM. I enjoyed them very much. Thankyou.

the kind of hospitality that leaves Hilton, Sheraton etc and their snobby little minions, for dead…
nice pics as per usual PM
thanks O40 and Thee. :)
You are right Dinetta0, but I have had some good service at some of the bigger known Hotels… perhaps not expecting too much is my bonus. I just need a space to sleep. I rarely use Accommodation for anything more than sleeping…

Oh true for weekend getaways…. but I was working, so it was more, get out, work hard, retire, get a feed, a cold bevvie and then sleep.
The Taxis in Arawa leave for Buka at 0300, so it was early to bed…
Here is the first of two delicate Orchids I spotted today. :)

and the second… even tinier.

Here is an Ant Plant.

Now, this looked like a Mistletoe with its mimicry leaves and the way it attached to the host, but the flowers were some of the most brightest things I have ever seen in a Rainforest.

Wow, what a bright thing! Very dramatic. The delicate orchids are very pretty PM. What or why is an ant plant?

WOW!
An Ant Plant, Myrmecodia sp. is a parasitic plant which provides a home to a colony of ants. The ants defend the plant against predators, and the plant provides some shelter. The dead ants provide nutrients to the plant.
They can grow quite large and look like a big spiky sponge, with some small strappy leaves protuding.

That’s what I said when I saw it… The other cool thing we saw today was a Raggiana Bird of Paradise in full plumage in the WILD and also a breeding pair of Magnificent Riflebirds. Simply gorgeous birds.

at one time it was quite a mystery as to why no other plants would grow well in the vicinity of an ant plant, then after some study it was found that the ants would destroy the neighbouring plants so that the ant plant could get all the available nutrients and water. this meant the ant plant flourished and the ants would have a healthy home.

Those ants rock! Mind you, I copped a few bites today trying to photograph the mistletoe flower.
How cool is this little shell of a flower?

FIGJAM anyone?

close relation to a Monstera deliciosa…

and this thing was almost parasititing itself onto a Strangler Fig????
