When the gfc struck I saw my super accounts go south. I thought with my health issues and not needing or wanting or able to work again I thought I would have a good chance of getting it early. I gave it a half hearted crack but the hurdles are high and you have to demonstrate real financial need so I gave up. Seems to me like an id points system and you have to get enough into each box, providing the information is not enough, you have to fill the criteria.

There is a reason you can’t access your super early easily.

Well especially if the Government pension age is going to 70 years. You will need your super for the gap period from when you retire because your body is stuffed and when you can get a pension. Remember that we have had compulsory employer super contributions now for about 20 years. So employees do have some super. People in my age group did not have this, you had to arrange your super yourself, out of your own money.

Well, that still applies to me and all other self employed people, really.

The only people guaranteed to get money from super are those who work for them

I think he is trying to get some/all of his super out early, citing difficult circumstances. It’s very difficult to get it out before your preservation age.

6 months on unemployment benefits will do it.

Oh, I see.
Apparently the well remunerated senators have different “rules” for themselves though.

I’ve read recently about speculation the Australian government is considering “accessing” some of “our” super, because of lack of revenue and future budget issues involving running the country.
In other words, they want to “borrow” our money to use for “what ever they decide is appropriate”

The total pool of superannuantions for Australia thus far is sitting at around $1.8 Trillion

Knowing how governments operate, this is a tasty morsel indeed they would love to stick their snouts into.

One option to stop the government taking your money might be sending it into super schemes over seas , the regulations there might stop the Government simply taking your money.

If the government decides it wants to do this it can expect a total defeat for decades

Good luck to them in their permanent retirement – they’ll be poison for any future employer
