Pom I asked on GE and this has been suggested.
How advanced is the plant? Because the baby leaves of Hibiscus trionum do tend to be a bit rounded, and there is a yellow form.

If a flower opens tomorrow I will take a photo and trty to get it up for viewing.
I’ve already done the Mimulus over. They have a tubular flower. Mine doesn’t. It opens out flat.
Lavatera trimestris ?

Sorry HP that’s not it. I was hoping a flower would open today so I could snap it. Flowers only last 1 day it seems. It has buds forming so all is not lost yet.
There are a couple of books that I have left to search through too. Maybe it’s in them.
I’ve got a bit of an interesting ID of my own. A seedling has come up in my vege patch that I thought I recognised. After I posted a pic on GE my suspicions were confirmed. It seems I might be the proud owner of an opium poppy. They’re beautiful things, I wonder if i can plead ignorance?

OMG! Where on earth would that have come from? How very strange. Take a pic won’t you. Best not to put it up on here maybe but you could show it to special gardening friends if you can think of any that live about 2 hours away from you. LOL.
Opium poppies are quite common down Sozzie way… They do need a crisp winter to really thrive…

It came up right beside a plant that I bought on ebay from someone who specialises in unusual plants so I’m thinking it may have come in the pot with it.
They used to be grown a lot as ornamentals years ago. I remember Mum having some but nobody knew they were opium.

They used to be up here once but they’re illegal now. :(
Years ago there was even a cafoofle about poppy seeds on bread and they disappeared for a while until good sense prevailed.

I’ve never seen one so a photo might be the next best thing if Bubba’s flowers.

I understand all poppy seeds are treated now.

It might not be one, so don’t get too excited.
There’s a lot of variation. Mums were big ruffled double red ones.

asiatic poppies are a common weed in adelaide and melbourne. you would have to arrest every gardener and grandma in these states to get rid of them.
Here’s my feral.

Now before anyone says it’s a prickly weed, that was my first thought but the leaves aren’t at all prickly.
I’ve only seen Iceland Poppies. My Grandfather grew his Icelands every year. 2 garden beds in the front yard. Same flowers every year. How weird is that?

flanders poppies look similar i think. leave it in – just don’t milk the sap or set up a large scale laboratory LOL.

Well i have a front garden bed full of self-seeded ones, and countless seeds in containers in the greenhouse. They were not sold as opium poppies but they look the same!
My unnamed plant didn’t flower yesterday. There are a couple of buds verging on opening though. I might tell you I am nursing this plant like a baby. Putting it in the sun by day and taking it in at night because I think it is probably frost intolerant. I don’t usually take this much care with any of my plants.
We are expecting #1 daughter and family for the w/e and as SIL is the computer brain of the clan I am going to see if he can set me up with a photobucket or similar so I can show some of the things I try to describe to you all. I have pics of the yellow tailed black cockatoo destruction waiting for a showing.
I will need precise instructions on usage and I know from past experience SIL is not a “teacher.” We shall see what we shall see!
