Hey Dropbear, that Belkin 4-port travel usb hub for $22 looks perfect for my needs.

What are you going to run off the ports? if they are power hungry you may need a powered usb hub. They are quite cheap too, but come with their own power pack.
On my simulator I have two x 7 port powered hubs.

As Pete said, a powered hub is better if you’re using it where you have access to a power point…
The only joy I’ve ever had with them is the powered 7 port.
Al the others just don’t seem to do the job. Go powered.

Just a mouse, thumb drive and usb modem
The other thing with the built in ports on the notebook is that they are very close together so you literally can’t fit even a usb modem & thumb drive at the same time without an extension cable.
Hopefully with just these requirements I wont need a powered hub?

Hmm, really?…..thanks for the advice
I only need it for mouse/thumb drive/usb modem
Maybe non powered will be an issue for the modem?

cheers, thanks for the feedback
I have an unpowered USB 2 hub and a powered USB 3 hub. The USB 3 is just the thing for copying films and TV shows from one hard drive to another.
My keyboard’s got two USB sockets built in. I’m using one for the mouse, and the other comes in handy for other things, although it’s pretty slow.

Nope.
You generally only need powered hubs if the power requirements for all your USB hardware is greater than the outlet can provide. In this day and age with lower power devices and high current USB ports, you can safely ignore them.

The Belkin 4-port powered for $29.95 are in stock at local officeworks so I might keep that in mind

http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l2632.R2.TR11.TRC1.A0.H1.Xpowered+usb+hub&_nkw=powered+usb+hub&_sacat=31530&_from=R40
awesome, thanks
Hmm
The specs on this one half way down the page:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7-Port-USB-2-0-HUB-Powered-AC-Adapter-Cable-High-Speed-Charger-Extender-Desktop-/380726990511?pt=AU_Laptop_Accessories&hash=item58a518d6af&_uhb=1
says 7 ports with upto 500mA available per port, however it says the power adapter is 1A output
Seems there is “potential” to overload the unit? (though maybe not probable)
Can the hub source 1A from the power adapter and another amp from the notebooks usb port?
Even then there is potential for overload….unless the specs are a misprint.
Admittedly it’s unlikely someone would have 7 devices all drawing 500mA or more
