….of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, taken from a distance of 104km, reveal giant boulders and rugged cliffs above the “neck” that joins the two chunks (second image is 3D). Giant versions of these images are available through here, by clicking on the one you want then on the “high res” link:

If it came by boat, it can claim ‘political asylum’.

If it got off a plane, it’s an illegal migrant.

I’ve never flown over LA. I thought it was less flat.

I used to live in Inglewood, it’s not far from LAX… there you don’t walk down the street at any time of the day or night alone, unless you would like to entertain strangers for an hour at a time.

Hollywood boulevard is a strange mix of cheap souvenir stores, sex shops and opulent shops and theatres …

There is no place I have been where I have seen such extremes passing each other in the street so frequently. Top place though, I loved being there

I worked in a hostel there for ages. It always amused me the people who would come in and be surprised that the ‘fancy’ part wasn’t as close or as vast as they expected. (well, people it is still a living thriving city home to 3.8 million people – they can’t all be in the movie business)

We are thinking of going in June next year…

Head over sans children and go to Vegas with some friends for thee or four days (they want to get remarried by Elvis for their 10th anniversary) – do all the typical Vegas things like hire a Ferrari and drive out to the Grand Canyon

Then meet the kiddlewinks in LA; take girlchild to Disneyland and teens to California Adventure Park and probaby do Universal Studios as well…

Than will probably hire a car and drive to San Fransisco…

excellent… I wasn’t excited by Vegas… but I’m not a gambler, the architecture was creative and grand, though I spent a lot of time mountain bike riding around the outskirts (most amazing) the GC is everything the name suggests IMO The kids will love the theme parks – sounds like a top trip

What do these tell us about how this comet formed? I think …

We can rule out that the strange shape is due to cratering impacts.
We can rule out that it’s a loose pile of rubble.

It has rough cliff features and smooth patches.

It looks like either it’s been created by sublimation loss of matter from a larger body. But what could have caused that larger body to have initially formed?
Or more likely by fragmentation into two pieces by a close encounter with either Jupiter or the Sun, followed by these two pieces later merging into one with a smooth area of accreted dust obscuring the join.

What do you think?

I’m willing to wait for the verdict after they’ve studied it through it’s journey to the sun. It’ll be very interesting to see from which parts most of the gas and dust arise, always supposing we get a clear view once it’s active.
